Tinubu campaign posters disappearing from parts of Abuja

Must read

Residents in the Federal Capital City (FCC) of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are reporting the disappearance of campaign posters of President Bola Tinubu In parts of the city.

It is not clear whether old ones are being pulled down to be replaced with new ones, but residents, especially along the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Way, also known as the Airport Road reported seeing men in a vehicle stopping and removing the posters.

Recall that many have criticised the brazen breach of the electoral law on campaigns and the silence of the Federal Capital Territory Administration supervised by the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike.

At press time, Everyday.ng was unable to reach the FCTA agency responsible for outdoor signages ànd advertisements.

Some months ago, a Nigerian online newspaper, PREMIUM TIMES, did a report highlighting the rash of what appeared to be unsolicited campaign posters for the President.

It said supporters of President Bola Tinubu have resumed displaying campaign posters across Abuja, days after the president urged them to suspend any 2027 election activities.
His aides said then that the early campaign materials breach Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) rules, which prohibit political advertising before the official timetable is released.

“Until INEC sets the timetable for the 2027 elections, the President has not endorsed or authorised anyone to mount a campaign for him,” presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said in April.

Despite the warning, new billboards have appeared along Airport Road and in the Central Business District, featuring slogans such as “Step Up, Speak Out, Support Tinubu” and “Join the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement Today.” One poster shows Tinubu beside former Niger Delta militant leader Government Ekpemupolo, known as Tompolo, described as the group’s “Grand Patron.”

The displays came as Tinubu marked nearly two years in office. Former presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Goodluck Jonathan announced their re-election bids in their third year.

Onanuga said early campaigning “undermines the integrity of the electoral process” and reaffirmed that Tinubu “does not support any action that violates INEC’s rules.”
