Plateau: unknown gunmen attack, sack villagers in Bokkos

Must read

From Ron Jacob, Jos.
Unknown gunmen suspected to be herdsmen in the early hours of Sunday attacked and sacked the people of Farin-Donghi village in Daffo District of Bokkos Local Government of Plateau.
The same village, among seven others, was attacked sometime between March 7 and March 8 where 10 persons were killed with several injured while various houses were burnt down, including places of worship.
One of the villagers simply called Mafulul, who made the disclosure to Everyday.ng, said that the “attackers took the villagers by surprise as it was masterminded early morning of Sunday.’’
He said that one person who got missing during the attack `”later resurfaced this afternoon of Sunday.’’
“We were afraid that he was killed but his appearance at Daffo town, where we all ran to, allayed our fears’’, he stated.
Mafulul said, “the attackers had sent a letter of the impending attack to us but the security men assured us of safety only for them not to be there for us when they (attackers) kept their threat.’’
The Council Chairman, Mr Yakubu Tamai, also confirmed the incident and described it as “very sad’’ and an “attack too many’’.
“Although no life has been lost to the attack, the people ran for their dear lives in the middle of Saturday night up to early morning of Sunday when the assailants attacked my harmless and innocent people.
“The entire houses standing in that village after the first attack of March, have been burnt down with all their properties destroyed while their (villagers) foodstuffs carted away by the attackers’’, the chairman said.
Tamai expressed worry over the attack, which he said took place even with the presence of some few security operatives stationed close to the village without the assailants been accosted or any of them arrested.
He lamented the continuous attacks on his people, a situation which he said has prevented the people from farming activities this farming season.
The chairman said he just recently presided over the sales of 10 trucks of fertilizers to the people but “with this kind of attack there is no way we can get the desired result this year’’.
“The council bought 16 trucks of the fertilizer with six being awaited. We subsidized the price to N5000 instead of N5, 500 and to be sold directly to the farmers to avoid resale in the open market.
“I only want to plead with my people to remain calm in the midst of this provocation as we are on top of he situation trying to ensure more security operatives like the Mopol are stationed permanently in that Farin-Gonghi village as well NTV village’’, he pledged.
Tamai said that when the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo came visiting the state, he made the request and that approval has been given to the council.
He said, “once we have a permanent security outpost at NTV village, it will greatly reduce the armed robbery incidences being recorded in that axis’’.
Contacted, Major Umar Adams, Spokesman of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) confirmed the incident but said no arrest has been made.
Adams however appealed to the villagers to remain calm and not to take the law into their hands as the officers and men were trailing the attackers to arrest them to face the wrath of the law.
