Troops of the Nigerian Army have rescued Hajiya Amina Abubakar, wife of late retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, following a fierce gun battle with armed bandits during ongoing counter-kidnapping operations in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.
Media reports and other sources said that the rescue was achieved during a search-and-rescue operation conducted under Operation FANSAN YAMMA and the newly launched Operation CLEAN SWEEP III, which was initiated in response to the abduction of the retired senior military officer and members of his family.
According to reports, troops tracked the kidnappers to Tunga village, where they met the armed group and a fierce ensued.
It was gathered that Amina Abubakar was hit by a bullet.
Troops immediately secured the area, recovered the victim and administered first aid to stabilise her condition before evacuating her to a medical facility for urgent treatment.
Military authorities confirmed that the rescued woman is currently receiving medical care, while security forces continue efforts to track down the fleeing suspects and dismantle their operational networks.
The rescue comes amid heightened military operations across parts of Katsina State following the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information and Defence spokesman, who died while in captivity after being abducted alongside his wife on May 30 along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli Road in Matazu Local Government Area. Government officials said the retired officer died from complications related to diabetes and hypertension while being held by his captors.
In response to the incident, the Defence Headquarters directed the Joint Task Force North-West under Operation FANSAN YAMMA to launch Operation CLEAN SWEEP III, a large-scale offensive targeting bandit and terrorist strongholds in Matazu and neighbouring communities. The operation commenced on June 14 and has involved aggressive fighting patrols, intelligence-led raids, cordon-and-search missions and clearance operations.
Military authorities reported significant gains in the Dikkawa Hills axis and surrounding communities, including Adua, Nasarawa and Karaduwa, where troops destroyed several terrorist camps, logistics hubs and support facilities used by criminal groups.
Security forces have since intensified follow-up operations aimed at capturing those responsible for the abduction and death of the retired general, as well as dismantling criminal hideouts across the region.
Officials said Operation CLEAN SWEEP III would continue until the perpetrators are apprehended and bandit networks operating in the area are neutralised.
The military reiterated its commitment to sustained offensive operations against armed groups and assured residents of Katsina State that efforts would continue to restore security and bring those responsible for the attack to justice.
