Nigeria’s opposition political landscape is undergoing a significant shake-up following the formal defection of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, and former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), a relatively new political platform gaining traction ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The two prominent opposition figures were officially received into the party on Sunday, May 3, at the NDC national secretariat in Abuja, where they were issued membership cards following a closed-door meeting with party leaders.

The event drew enthusiastic supporters and marked a decisive break from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which both men recently exited.

Their move comes amid deepening internal crises within the ADC, which has faced prolonged leadership disputes and legal battles in recent months. Obi, in particular, cited a “toxic” political climate, persistent instability, and internal divisions as key reasons for his departure.

The NDC itself has only recently secured formal recognition by Nigeria’s electoral body after a protracted legal process, with its registration reportedly backed by a court order.

This has raised questions among analysts about potential legal complexities surrounding the party’s structure, even as it positions itself as a unifying platform for opposition forces.

The duo were welcomed into the party by Seriake Dickson, a former Bayelsa State governor and leading figure within the NDC, alongside other top party officials. Discussions during the meeting reportedly centered on aligning political ideologies and building a cohesive front ahead of the next election cycle.

Political observers say the development signals an intensifying realignment among opposition leaders seeking to consolidate strength against the ruling establishment in the run-up to the 2027 elections. Speculation is already growing about a possible joint presidential ticket involving Obi and Kwankwaso, though no formal announcement has been made.

With Nigeria’s opposition space increasingly fragmented yet fluid, the emergence of the NDC as a rallying platform for high-profile defectors could reshape the dynamics of the upcoming electoral contest.
