Concerns are growing in Odulu village, Bassa Local Government Area of Kogi State, following the arrest and continued detention of three community members by officers of the Oguma Divisional Police Headquarters.
The individuals in custody have been identified as Mr. Zekeri Omede, a community leader; Mr. Ilemona, a farmer; and Chief Maisia Mazi, the Bassa community chief.
According to reports, their arrest stems from a complaint filed by Fulani herders who alleged the discovery of a dead cow on farmland within the community. Acting on the complaint, police officers reportedly visited Odulu village and detained the three men on suspicion of involvement.
As of the time of filing this report, attempts by family members and community representatives to secure their release on bail have not been successful. Police authorities have stated that investigations into the matter are ongoing.
However, the arrests have elicited criticism among residents, who question whether proper procedures were followed. Some community members argue that the detention occurred without sufficient preliminary investigation linking the suspects to the alleged incident.
A concerned indigene, Mr. Shedrach Ibrahim, expressed unease over the situation, stating that the detention of respected members of the community without clear evidence raises serious due process concerns.
“We are deeply worried that law-abiding individuals have been held without prior investigation establishing their involvement,” he said.
Residents have also warned that the situation could heighten tensions in the area and erode public trust in law enforcement if not handled transparently and fairly, according to a statement issued by Isaac Ainoko on behalf of the Sons and Daughters from Odulu Forum.
The community has called on the Kogi State Commissioner of Police to urgently review the case, ensure adherence to due process, and guarantee impartial justice. They also appealed for a thorough and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident to prevent wrongful accusations and maintain peace in the area.
