The traditional ruler of Lilu community in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, His Majesty Igwe Barrister Godson Onyediri, was moved to tears on Wednesday as he recounted the scale of human and material losses suffered by his people over the past five years due to  violence.

Speaking during an interaction with community members, the monarch described the devastation as overwhelming, noting that his palace and personal residence were among properties completely razed during the early stages of the violence that engulfed Lilu and neighbouring communities along the Anambra–Imo border, particularly those adjoining the Orlu zone of Imo State.

Despite the widespread destruction across the community, Igwe Onyediri expressed optimism and commended the resilience of Lilu youths, whom he praised for their collective efforts toward recovery.

According to him, the youths, recognising that Lilu remains their only home, mobilised themselves and pooled resources to chart a path toward peace and rebuilding.

“I commend you all. I want to assure you and every citizen of Lilu that all shall be well again. It will not be long,” the monarch said.

He announced a 90-day target for the restoration of normalcy in the community, declaring that within the next three months, peace and stability would return to Lilu.

Igwe Onyediri acknowledged that the wanton destruction and insecurity had drained enormous human and material resources but expressed satisfaction that the sacrifices were already yielding positive results.

The monarch also praised Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, for his commitment to restoring peace in the area, saying the governor had not forgotten Lilu and had done more for the community than for many others in the state.

He disclosed that plans were underway to ensure that displaced residents, including himself, would return home within the stipulated 90-day period.

Calling for collective responsibility, the Igwe urged all sons and daughters of Lilu, irrespective of social status, to set aside divisive tendencies and work together for lasting peace.

“We have no other place to call home,” he said, while appealing for greater participation from all stakeholders.

The monarch also cautioned those he accused of working against peace and progress in the community, warning that history and posterity would not be kind to them.

He concluded by commending the youths of Lilu for their initiative in organising a national conference aimed at fostering unity and accelerating the community’s recovery.
