Must read

An explosion rocked a mosque within Gamboru Market in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) on Tuesday evening, killing at least four people and injuring dozens, security authorities have confirmed.

The incident occurred at about 6:00 p.m. while Muslim worshippers were observing evening prayers. Preliminary investigations by Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), according to its spokesman, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, indicate that the blast was caused by a suspected Boko Haram suicide bomber who detonated an improvised explosive device. The bomber died in the explosion along with two civilians at the scene.

Security forces, including troops of OPHK, the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, and other security agencies, swiftly responded to the incident. Officials said the area was secured and cordoned off to prevent further harm. The Borno State Government and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) also participated in the emergency response.

Casualties were evacuated to the General Hospital and the Teaching Hospital in Maiduguri for treatment. Authorities reported that 32 civilians sustained varying degrees of injuries. Two of the injured later died in hospital, while two others remain in critical condition. The remaining victims are reported to be stable and receiving medical care.

Following the attack, security agencies have intensified surveillance and patrols across Maiduguri and surrounding areas. Members of the public have been advised to remain calm but vigilant, particularly during the yuletide season, and to promptly report any suspicious persons or activities to the nearest security post.

OPHK expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and reassured residents of its commitment to protecting lives and property in the North-East.
