For his role in aiding an escapee in the alleged murder of a top police officer, a former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr Jokotola Pelumi, and 49 others are cooling their heels in Police detention as a first step to facing a murder charge.
The former state lawmaker and lawyer helped to hide one of the alleged murderers of the police officer.
The alleged murderer, along with others, according to Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Imohimi Edgal, attacked and killed Akingboju Akindele, a Deputy Superintendent of Police.
Late Akindele was brought down as he tried to effect the arrest of some suspected cultists.
Said Edgal to journalists in Ikeja, “On Oct. 27, at about 4:30 p.m, a team of Anti Cultism policemen attached to Area ‘N’ Ijede, were attacked while trying to effect arrest of some suspected cultists.
“In the process, a police officer by name DSP Akingboju Akindele was killed.
“Investigation into the case led to the arrest of 49 suspects including a former Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Jokotola Pelumi.
“The policeman’s rifle had been recovered at water front Ijede where it was burried.”
Investigations, Edgal said, narrowed the actual culprits to five adding that one of them was found hiding in Pelumi’s home.
“The other suspects and the former lawmaker will be treated as accomplices. All the arrested suspects are currently being investigated at SCIID Panti, Yaba and would be charged to court on Monday.”
