Every believer lives with a dual identity. We are citizens of a kingdom we cannot see, and ambassadors sent to a world we can. Understanding both realities, and holding them together, shapes how we walk out our faith daily.
Citizens of Heaven
Philippians 3:20 tells us that our citizenship is in heaven. This is not a future hope only; it is a present truth. Citizenship carries weight. It means our primary allegiance, our values, and our identity are rooted somewhere beyond the borders of this earth.
A citizen belongs. A citizen has rights, protections, and a home to return to. As citizens of heaven, we carry the values of that kingdom into every space we occupy. We do not borrow our identity from culture, careers, or circumstances. We already belong to something eternal, and that belonging governs how we live.
This is why Scripture reminds us not to be conformed to the patterns of this world. A citizen of heaven thinks differently, because their true home operates on different terms: righteousness, justice, love, and truth.
Ambassadors on Earth
But citizenship is only half the picture. 2 Corinthians 5:20 says we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making His appeal through us. An ambassador does not live for themselves. They represent a nation that is not their own soil, carrying its message, its authority, and its character wherever they are sent.
Ambassadors do not withdraw from the places they are sent to. They engage. They build relationships, communicate clearly, and represent their home nation with dignity, even in unfamiliar or hostile territory. As ambassadors, believers are called to remain present in the world, in our workplaces, communities, and relationships, representing heaven’s message of reconciliation.
Holding Both Together
The tension many believers feel comes from favoring one identity over the other. Some become so heavenly minded that they disengage from the world, forgetting they were sent here on assignment. Others become so absorbed in earthly life that they lose sight of their true citizenship and begin to live like the world they were sent to reach.
The call is to hold both realities without letting go of either. We live here, fully present and engaged, but we live from there, rooted in an identity that does not shift with circumstances. Our conduct, speech, and choices should reflect the kingdom we belong to, even as we function within the systems of this world.
Living the Dual Reality
Practically, this means:
• Letting heaven’s values shape earthly decisions, in how we work, speak, and treat others
• Representing Christ with excellence and integrity, not withdrawal
• Remembering that our current struggles and successes are temporary, but our citizenship is permanent
• Engaging our communities as sent ones, not as those who are stranded
We are not meant to choose between being heavenly minded or earthly useful. We are called to be both at once: rooted in heaven, present on earth, carrying a message that only ambassadors with a true home can carry.
