Dr. Nonye Soludo, wife of Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo, has strongly condemned the recent personal attacks made by the All Progressives Congress (APC) deputy governorship candidate, Uche Ekwunife, who accused the governor of having body odour and bad breath.
In a recent viral video, Ekwunife — a former senator representing Anambra Central — launched a scathing attack on Governor Soludo, claiming he emits foul odour and has poor hygiene. Her comments appeared to be in retaliation to Soludo’s earlier remarks questioning the credibility of her doctorate degree, which he alleged was obtained from an unaccredited university in the United States.
In response, Ekwunife denied the governor’s claims and dared him to verify her academic records, stating:
“Go to court if you claim my PhD certificate is fake. Visit Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, for my Master’s degree and the University of Calabar for my Bachelor’s degree. I earned both before obtaining my PhD.”
She further said:
“The illiterate professor who claims to be the governor of Anambra State should leave me alone. Nigeria is a democratic country, and every political party knows its candidate.
Soludo has contested the governorship twice before Willie Obiano imposed him on Ndi Anambra.
Anambra has become unsafe; people now avoid the state, which once attracted visitors.
Has no one told you that your mouth smells? You’re the dirtiest governor in Africa. You stink—your armpits smell. Ask your wife to buy you deodorant. When you bathe, apply it under your arms like every normal man.
The stench from your mouth when you speak is disgraceful for a governor.”
Below are Ekwunife’s comments in Igbo language in a viral video:
In a statement issued by her media adviser, Daniel Ezeigwe, Dr. Nonye Soludo responded, urging Ekwunife to refrain from dragging her into political mudslinging and to instead focus on addressing the controversy surrounding her academic qualifications.
She also refuted claims made by Ekwunife that she served in the administration of former Governor Chinwoke Mbadinuju, clarifying that neither she nor her husband had any involvement with that government.
“Senator Ekwunife’s descent into hate speech and name-calling is unfortunate. It is even more regrettable that she would attempt to drag a woman who is widely respected by the people into her political battles,” the statement read.
“At no point were Professor Soludo or his wife involved in the government of the time. Instead of resorting to character assassination, we urge Senator Ekwunife to focus on defending the credibility of her academic degrees with verifiable evidence.”
