The Nigerian Army has commenced investigations into an incident involving Major General G.S. Mohammed and his aide, Corporal A. Abubakar, who were caught on video allegedly assaulting a couple, Mr. Vershima Mker and Ms. Lami Jennifer Iorvihi, in Abuja.
An unverified report says the couple plan to sue the army general for N150 million for the assault that saw Mker bleeding from his left eye region.
The General was captured on video as one of his aides was seen assaulting Mker, while in another shot, Ms. Iorvihi was being assaulted in an attempt to collect her phone which filmed the incident.
The couple, it was alleged, overtook an official car the major-general was driving in in Abuja.
Narrating the incident, the couple disclosed that the officer stopped their car, dragged them out, and subjected them to severe physical abuse.
Following the assault, the couple claims they were handcuffed, forced into the trunk of a vehicle, and taken to Gwarimpa Police Station, where the General allegedly ordered the police to detain them indefinitely.
Army spokesperson Major General Onyema Nwachukwu confirmed the Army was aware of the video and has initiated a thorough investigation.
According to him, the Acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede, ordered an immediate investigation into the alleged brutality.
He said a viral audio-visual recording circulating on social media platforms, purportedly showed a senior army officer and two other soldiers in an altercation with a man and woman within the Abuja metropolis.
According to him, the circumstances leading to this incident are not clear at the moment.
“However, the Acting Chief of Army Staff has ordered an immediate investigation to unravel the true circumstances surrounding this altercation.
“The Nigerian Army remains committed to serving and protecting all law-abiding Nigerians as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“Therefore, we urge the public to be rest assured that due diligence will be applied to reach a logical conclusion on this matter,” he said.
