The purported suspension of Yola -North Council Chairman Alhaji Mahmud Abba , by a section of Adamawa State Assembly members took a worrisome dimension, as heavily armed policemen sealed the secretariat in the early hours of Tuesday.
When our reporter visited the council, workers were prevented access into their offices by the police and a detachment of Department of State Services (DSS) officials deployed to the area to prevent breakdown of law and order.
Investigations also revealed that some members of the Assembly attempted to get the council councillors to impeach the chairman during their Tuesday sitting since the purported suspension lacks legal backing.
Further investigations showed that the embattled chairman contacted top government and security officials who helped halt the sitting of the councillors to pave way for the chairman to challenge his suspension in court this week.
There were conflicting reports over what led to the suspension of Abba, but clarity is expected in the coming days.
While addressing the stranded workers of the council, the Adamawa state police commissioner Mr. Oyekunle Adegboyega, who will be retiring from service this Wednesday said that the security at the council secretariat is to protect lives and property and prevent total breakdown of law and order.
The Vice chairman Mr. Joshua Rafael commended the securitiy forces for the prompt action to forestall chaos in the council.
