From Lagos to Ibadan, now back to Lagos: residents trapped again in collapsed building

Another building in Lagos Island has collapsed as reports have emerged that four trapped persons have been rescued.

The four are alleged to be scavengers in operation when the building collapsed on them.

Last week, 20 persons, includng school children and a pregnant woman, were among the dead when a storey building, housing a school, collapsed last Wednesday. 45 persons were rushed to hospitals for treatment after the collapse on Massey street in Itafaji.

Shortly after, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, there was a report of a collapsed building, which a state government official attributed to poor construction.

On Egerton Square in Oke Arin area of Lagos Island, another defective building collapsed as the Lagos State Building Control Agency was demolishing another house in the vicinity, reports said..

Hundress of buildings in the Lagos Island area are believed to be defective, and government officials are alleged to have fed fat on owners of the structures until the corruption bubble burst with the collapse of the building housing the school. Other sources allege that owners of the structures have consistently resisted efforts to effect the demolition.

The Lagos government immediately began the demolitions last Friday in an exercise that will affect nearly 200 structures.

The Director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Rasaki Musbau, confirmed Monday’s incident, and said firefighters had been deployed in the area.

The Head of Public Affairs Unit, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Mr Kehinde Adebayo, said the agency had received multiple calls from the area informing them of the situation
