Tension gripped parts of Abuja on Thursday after a routine traffic enforcement operation turned into a frightening gun drama when a suspected operative of the Department of State Services (DSS) allegedly opened fire on officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) during a confrontation at the Idu area of the Federal Capital Territory.
The shocking incident, which occurred at about 3:20pm near the RS7.118 Idu Unit Command, caused panic among motorists, commuters and residents as gunshots rang out in the busy district.
According to the FRSC, the trouble began when officers on routine patrol flagged down the driver of a Toyota Carina for an alleged traffic violation.
But instead of stopping for checks, the driver reportedly defied officials and drove recklessly through traffic in what eyewitnesses described as a desperate attempt to evade arrest.
Sources said the vehicle was eventually trapped in a traffic buildup close to the FRSC command, where operatives approached the driver for routine verification of vehicle particulars and driver documentation.
What followed, however, stunned both officials and bystanders.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Corps Public Education Officer, Deputy Corps Commander Osondu Ohaeri, the motorist allegedly became aggressive and resisted lawful enforcement procedures.
The FRSC spokesperson disclosed that repeated attempts by road safety personnel to calm the situation only worsened the confrontation.
“Despite several tactical and professional attempts by FRSC personnel to de-escalate the situation, the offender escalated the confrontation by physically advancing toward officers and later drawing a pistol, which he fired twice within the vicinity of the Command,” the statement said.
The sound of gunfire instantly sent pedestrians and motorists scampering for safety as confusion erupted around the checkpoint.
Witnesses said FRSC officials momentarily ducked for cover before swiftly regrouping and confronting the armed suspect.
In a swift turn of events, the road safety operatives successfully overpowered and disarmed the gun-wielding officer without firing back or causing casualties.
The Corps described the response of its personnel as disciplined and highly professional despite the grave danger posed by the suspect’s actions.
“In the face of imminent danger to lives and property, FRSC personnel acted with remarkable restraint, professionalism and tactical discipline to swiftly disarm the assailant without loss of life,” the statement added.
One FRSC marshal reportedly sustained minor bruises during the struggle.
Security sources later identified the suspect as a serving operative of the DSS, Nigeria’s domestic intelligence agency.
The suspect was immediately handed over to officers of the Nigeria Police Force at the Life Camp Police Station alongside the pistol, ammunition components and the vehicle involved in the incident.
The matter has since been transferred to the appropriate command for further investigation.
The incident has triggered widespread reactions, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the growing trend of abuse of power and the misuse of firearms by security personnel.
Reacting to the development, Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, praised the officers involved for maintaining composure under intense pressure and resisting the temptation to retaliate with force.
“He further stated unequivocally that no individual, regardless of status, rank or agency affiliation, is above the law,” the FRSC statement noted.
The Corps Marshal stressed that security operatives must serve as examples of discipline and obedience to lawful authority.
“Firearms and official status must never be used as instruments of intimidation against law enforcement officers carrying out legitimate duties,” he warned.
The FRSC also called for stronger collaboration and mutual respect among security agencies, warning that inter-agency hostility could undermine public confidence and national security operations.
Thursday’s incident has once again spotlighted the dangers routinely faced by traffic enforcement officers and the urgent need for professionalism, accountability and operational discipline among armed personnel across the country.
