Must read

Kingston, Jamaica — The world of music is mourning the loss of reggae icon Jimmy Cliff, born James Chambers, who passed away on Monday at the age of 81. His death was confirmed by his wife, Latifa Chambers, on his official social media channels.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Latifa revealed that her husband suffered a seizure followed by pneumonia, ultimately leading to his death. She expressed gratitude to their family, friends, fellow artists, and medical staff: “I am thankful for his family, friends, fellow artists and coworkers who have shared his journey with him.” She also addressed his global fan base, saying, “Your support was his strength throughout his whole career. He really appreciated each and every fan for their love.”

Cliff, a two-time Grammy Award winner, was a towering figure in reggae, ska, and soul. His career spanned more than six decades. He first made an impact in Jamaica as a teenager, releasing his first hit, “Hurricane Hattie,” in his early years.

He starred in the landmark 1972 film The Harder They Come, a crime drama that played a pivotal role in bringing reggae to a global audience. His discography includes some of the most enduring songs in reggae history: “Many Rivers to Cross”, “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, and his hit cover of Johnny Nash’s “I Can See Clearly Now”.

He was also honored in Jamaica and globally: in 2010, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and he received the Jamaican Order of Merit, one of the country’s highest cultural honors.

Upon news of his passing, tributes poured in. Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, and Culture Minister Olivia Grange praised Cliff’s global influence and his role as a cultural ambassador. The People’s National Party also described him as “a musical trailblazer and global cultural ambassador.”

Jimmy Cliff leaves behind a powerful legacy — not just in music, but in Jamaican cultural identity itself.
