Nigeria took a downward step in the participation of women in the political process, when out of 85 names of senators-elect, there were only three females on the list released by the Independent National Electoral Commission list by INEC,
Eight names are missing, as the commission noted that supplementary elections will be held in the affected senatorial districts.
The affected districts include; Enugu East, Kebbi North, Plateau Central, Sokoto East, North and South, Yobe South and Zamfara Central. There is strong female contender in these Districts.
There are six female senators in the present ninth National Assembly with two prominent ones: Uche Ekwunife and Aisha Birabi, losing out in the February 25 election.
The women who made the list are former Lagos State Deputy Governor, Mrs. Idiot Oluranti Adebule, though she was identified as a male on the INEC list.
Rivers Deputy Governor, Harry Ipalibo, also made the list from the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
The third female entrant is a woman who rode on the popularity of the Labour Party (LP) in Abuja to achieve her 24 years old dream of being a Senator, Ireti Kingibe. Ireti is a sibling of the wife of former Head of State, Mrs. Awoke Murtala Mohammed. She has contested the seat on different political parties in the last elections.
