Ebonyi federal lawmakers have told Governor David Umahi that he is basically on his own after they declared their resolve on Wednesday to remain in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The lawmakers’ decision a day after the governor’s defection may be a breather for the embattled opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which watched as Umahi drag with him all, at least almost all, of the party’s apparatus with him to the APC.
Led by Senator Sam Egwu, himself a one-time governor of the state, the three senators and members of the House of Representatives say they are not part of the defection train of Umahi.
A source said the next few months will tell if the political calculations of Umahi, generally believed to have a presidential ambition in 2023, will work out.
“He has Ebonyi in his pocket today, but I believe with what the National Assembly members did, more and more will be emboldened to break away and insist they are with the PDP. You have to bear in mind that many joined him simply out of fear than conviction. Let us keep our fingers crossed,” the source added.
