Must read

The beloved Rattlesnake star leaves behind a decades-long screen legacy, an award-winning career and a family still grieving a devastating personal loss.

Nigeria’s film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru, who passed away at the age of 57 after a brief illness.

The actor’s family announced his death in a statement published on his official Instagram page in the early hours of Friday, expressing gratitude to fans, colleagues and well-wishers for their prayers and support during the difficult period.

“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness,” the family stated.

“We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.”

The family did not disclose the specific illness that led to his death. The announcement has sparked renewed grief among admirers of the actor, whose performances helped shape the memories of generations of Nigerian movie lovers.

Tributes began emerging from within the entertainment industry following the announcement.

Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu, president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), paid tribute to the late actor in an Instagram post, writing: “Another great thespian gone….Rest in peace Francis Duru!!”

The confirmation from the guild’s president has added to the sense of loss surrounding the passing of an actor whose career spanned several decades.

Duru was more than a familiar face on Nigerian screens. He belonged to a generation of performers whose work helped establish Nollywood as a major force in African popular culture.

From Missing Mark to the unforgettable Ahanna

Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Duru developed a career that would eventually make him a recognisable name in Nigerian cinema.

He received his primary and secondary education in Cameroon before relocating to Nigeria for university studies. He subsequently studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1996.

His acting journey began in 1989 with Missing Mark, directed by the late Ndubuisi Oko. However, it was his performance as Ahanna in the 1995 production Rattlesnake, produced by the late filmmaker Amaka Igwe, that brought him wider recognition.

The role helped establish Duru as a memorable presence in Nollywood during a formative period for the industry.

He continued to feature in numerous productions, including Blood Money (1997), Stigma (2013) and Mboputa (2020), demonstrating his versatility across different stories and styles of filmmaking.

His contributions earned him several honours. In 2020, he won Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa. He was also recognised as a United Nations Ambassador of Peace in 2007 for his influence on young people.

In 2010, Duru served as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria and received a nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the Africa Movie Academy Awards.

These achievements reflected a career that extended beyond individual screen performances into the wider development of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

The health rumours he once rejected

Duru’s death comes months after he publicly dismissed reports suggesting that he was battling a life-threatening illness.

In June 2026, a video showing the actor looking frail circulated widely on social media, prompting concern among fans and colleagues.

The actor subsequently addressed the speculation in an Instagram video, describing the circulating footage as “fabricated and malicious”.

He thanked supporters for their concern and prayers while condemning the spread of what he considered misleading claims about his health.

His death following a brief illness has revived attention to those earlier reports. However, the family has not disclosed the nature of his final illness, and there is no confirmed public information establishing a connection between the earlier video and the circumstances of his death.

A family marked by loss

Away from the cameras, Duru shared his life with his wife, Adokiye, whom he married in 2003. The couple had four children together.

The family experienced a heartbreaking tragedy in August 2024 with the death of their child, Ifeanyi.

The actor’s passing is another profound loss for his immediate family, who have asked for prayers, love and understanding as they mourn.

Details of funeral arrangements had not been made public in the initial announcement.

A legacy that outlives the screen

Francis Duru’s death marks the end of a remarkable chapter in a career that began in 1989 and grew alongside Nollywood’s rise.

From his early work in Missing Mark to his memorable portrayal of Ahanna in Rattlesnake, he built a body of work that connected him with audiences across generations.

His award-winning performance in Mboputa, his service within the Actors Guild of Nigeria and his recognition for youth-focused influence further underscored his place in the industry.

For many fans, his legacy will live on in the characters he brought to life, the stories he helped tell and the memories his performances created.

As colleagues and admirers reflect on his life, the family’s announcement leaves a simple but poignant farewell to a man whose career touched many.

Francis Duru, 1969–2026. May his soul rest in perfect peace.
