Obi Pledges Support to Slain Enugu Supporter’s Mother, Sends 15-Month Stipend

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged continued financial support to the mother of Ifeanyi Nwolie, his supporter who was reportedly shot dead during a political activity in Enugu State on October 10, 2026.

Obi, who attended Nwolie’s burial in Afa, Udi Local Government Area, visited the bereaved mother after the ceremony and reportedly sent her a 15-month stipend, covering payments through December 2027, to replace the monthly financial support she received from her late son.

“My humble pledge to the mother is that God Almighty, whom it pleased to bring Ifeanyi home, has also given her another son in me to support her, as Ifeanyi used to,” Obi said in a statement shared on his X handle.

He described Nwolie’s death as a painful reminder of the human cost of political violence and urged candidates contesting the 2027 general elections to reject violence, ethnic division and religious bigotry.

In a separate statement, Obi’s Media Office also condemned an alleged AI-generated image depicting Obi, Cardinal John Onaiyekan and Enugu State NDC governorship candidate, Sir Chinyeaka Oha, seeking Pope Leo XIV’s blessing for electoral victory.

The Media Office urged political opponents to keep the Pope and the Catholic Church out of partisan campaigns, describing the image as misleading and inappropriate.

Obi reiterated that political campaigns should focus on candidates’ records, policies, character and vision, rather than fabricated religious controversies.

He called for respect for the rule of law, peaceful political participation and a democratic process in which citizens can exercise their rights without fear.
