The Kano State Government has reiterated its commitment to ending the protracted emirship dispute rocking the ancient city, assuring residents that a peaceful and lasting resolution is forthcoming.

Speaking on Thursday during a press briefing in Kano, Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, said the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is engaging all relevant stakeholders with a view to restoring peace, unity, and social cohesion in the state.

Waiya emphasized that the government’s approach is anchored on respect for the rule of law and the sanctity of traditional institutions, which he described as pillars of peace and cultural heritage in Kano. He stressed that no action will be taken to undermine the emirate system.

The long-running dispute escalated in May 2024 when Governor Yusuf signed the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024, abolishing the 2019 emirate structure and dissolving additional emirates created by a previous administration. This paved the way for the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano and the removal of Aminu Ado Bayero as the 15th Emir.

Since then, the tussle has attracted legal battles, court rulings, and public debate, with conflicting orders being issued by various courts and the matter currently before the Supreme Court. Despite these challenges, the state government says dialogue and mutual understanding remain central to resolving differences among traditional stakeholders.

On the sidelines of the briefing, Waiya also defended Governor Yusuf’s recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). According to him, aligning Kano with the party in power at the federal level will unlock enhanced cooperation and pave the way for increased federal interventions and developmental projects across critical sectors including infrastructure, health, education, and social welfare.

“The defection opens more doors for Kano,” the commissioner said, urging residents to expect tangible dividends of democracy as a result of the strengthened relationship between the state and federal governments.

The governor’s political realignment has drawn mixed reactions within political and traditional circles, with some experts warning that it could impact the delicate balance of interests surrounding the emirship issue.

As Kano continues to navigate these intertwined political and cultural dynamics, the state government maintains that dialogue, legal processes, and respect for tradition will guide efforts toward a peaceful and equitable outcome.
