Inside the Kano family tragedy: Police probe deepens as nephew arrested over murder of mother, six children

Residents of Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters in Kano State are still struggling to come to terms with the horrific killing of Fatima Abubakar, 35, and her six children, an attack that has left a quiet neighbourhood in shock and raised troubling questions about violence within close family circles.

The tragedy unfolded on January 17, 2025, at about 12:10 p.m., when assailants reportedly gained access to the family’s residence and launched a brutal assault using dangerous weapons. Neighbours said the attack happened in broad daylight, compounding fears about safety and the boldness of the perpetrators.

All seven victims sustained fatal injuries and were rushed to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, where they were confirmed dead by medical personnel.

As investigations intensified, the Kano State Police Command confirmed the arrest of a nephew of the deceased, a development that has shifted the case from a random act of violence to a deeply disturbing family-linked crime. Police sources disclosed that the suspect is being questioned to establish his role in the killings and to determine whether he acted alone or with accomplices.

While authorities have not yet released full details of the motive, investigators are reportedly examining family relationships, prior disputes, and movements around the home before the attack. The police have also continued forensic and intelligence-led inquiries to reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the mass killing.

Community members described Fatima Abubakar as a quiet woman devoted to her children. “She was always with them. Nothing like this was ever expected,” a neighbour said, speaking under anonymity due to the sensitivity of the case.

The Kano State Police Command described the incident as “deeply painful and unacceptable,” extending condolences to the bereaved family and the wider Kano community. Residents have been urged to remain calm and support the investigation by providing credible information to security agencies.

Police authorities assured the public that justice will be pursued diligently, warning against speculation and the spread of unverified claims that could inflame tensions or compromise ongoing investigations.
