Chairman of BUA Group, Abdul Samad Rabiu, has confirmed the payment of a $500,000 cash reward to Nigeria’s Super Eagles despite their semifinal exit at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Commendations also came from two prominent politicians: Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
The Super Eagles bowed out of the tournament on Wednesday night after losing 4–2 on penalties to host nation Morocco, following a goalless draw after regulation time and extra time in their semifinal encounter.
Shortly after the match, Rabiu took to his verified social media platforms to commend the national team for their spirited performance, describing their outing as courageous and worthy of national pride. He reiterated that the $500,000 incentive he earlier promised would still be honoured, even though the team failed to reach the final.
According to the BUA chairman, the gesture was aimed at appreciating the players’ commitment, resilience and overall progress at the tournament. He noted that the Super Eagles’ campaign reflected growth and renewed hope for Nigerian football.
“The team gave their all and represented the country with pride. This reward is to recognise their remarkable journey and effort at the competition,” Rabiu said.
Reports indicate that the incentive, estimated at about ₦710 million, is one of the biggest private rewards pledged to the national team in recent times.
Meanwhile, the Super Eagles’ semifinal exit has continued to draw reactions from across the country, with political leaders, sports administrators and fans praising the players for rekindling optimism despite falling short of a place in the final.
Nigeria reached the semifinals after a series of impressive performances at AFCON 2025, raising expectations and reaffirming the team’s potential ahead of future international engagements.
In his tweet on X, Obi said: “Dearest gallant Super Eagles, it was a battle well fought and heads were not bowed.
“Thank you for a beautiful 120 minutes of incredible play. You showed your strength and prowess against all odds.
“The journey is not over. You have made the nation proud. Keep your heads high, the Eagle never stops soaring.
“There is another stage, let’s go get that medal. You have done well.”
Also on his X handle, former Kano governor and leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, said: “Chin up, Super Eagles. You played well against a great opponent. Now let us get the bronze!”
