Police suspends tinted glass permit enforcement following court order

Must read

The Nigeria Police Force has officially suspended the enforcement of the controversial tinted glass permit policy, following a court order halting the exercise.

This development was confirmed by SP Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, during an interview on AIT in Abuja on Wednesday, October 8, 2025.

According to Adeh, the suspension took immediate effect upon the police receiving the court directive.

“Information reaching me now is that the order has been received, and the enforcement of the tinted permit is now on hold,” she said.

The move comes amid growing public backlash, legal challenges, and widespread concerns over the legality and transparency of the permit process. Many Nigerians have criticized the policy, alleging it enabled extortion and was being used as a revenue-generating tool by some officers.

Responding to these allegations, Adeh clarified that all payments related to tinted permits are made directly into the federal government’s Treasury Single Account (TSA), and not into the hands of individual officers.

She stressed that the original intent behind the policy was purely rooted in security concerns. According to the police, the use of vehicles with tinted windows by criminals had made it increasingly difficult to identify suspects and prevent crimes.

“It is basically because of security concerns. Some criminals were using tinted vehicles to commit offences, making it difficult for law enforcement to identify suspects,” Adeh explained.

Despite the controversy, the police maintain that they are committed to upholding the rule of law. Adeh assured the public that enforcement would remain suspended until the court concludes its deliberations.

“We are waiting for the verdict; we are not against the courts, and we will continue to wait until we get a verdict,” she concluded.
