Anambra sacks men who assaulted female corps member

Must read

The Anambra State Government has dismissed eight members of the Agunechemba Security outfit for their involvement in the brutal assault and public stripping of a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Miss Jennifer Elobor.

Ken Emeakayi, Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Security, announced the dismissal on Wednesday at the agency’s headquarters in Awka.

According to Emeakayi, the government acted promptly upon receiving reports of the incident and has resolved to hand the dismissed operatives over to the police for prosecution. He explained that the officers were allegedly pursuing suspected cultists on Tuesday when they attacked Miss Elobor — an action he condemned as being completely beyond the agency’s mandate and utterly unacceptable.

“This administration will not tolerate unprofessional conduct, brutality, or abuse of power by any security operative,” Emeakayi stated. “Any officer found guilty of misconduct will face immediate dismissal and prosecution.”

Despite appeals from the victim’s family and NYSC officials for a discreet resolution, the state government insisted on a full investigation and accountability, emphasizing the need to set a strong example.

Emeakayi added that the government had covered Miss Elobor’s medical expenses, replaced her damaged items — including a laptop and phone — and issued a public apology to her family, the NYSC, and the general public.

He emphasised that the incident marks a turning point in efforts to reform the security outfit and restore public trust in community-based security operations.

“This government is fully committed to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of human rights in all its security efforts,” he said.
