Video: Flood reigns, cars, houses submerged

These are not the best of times for the people of the confluence state of Kogi, which capital town is gradually getting submerged in flood waters, streaming in from Rivers Niger and Benue.

The development has also raised the fear that if the flooding continues, the busy gateway route of Lokoja to the north and South, may be blocked by the waters.

Elsewhere in the northcentral state, according to Wisdom Express News, the Local Government Chairman of Ibaji in Kogi State, Hon. Williams Iko’Ojo, has commended the pragmatic and timely efforts of Hydro Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC), for providing relief materials worth millions of naira to the people of Onyedega ogwojibo and Atiko communities.

The chairman,who made the commendation while inspecting the level of damage caused by the flood at Onyedega the headquarters of Ibaji LGA, described the 2022 flood as “unfortunate.”

The Chairman,who noted that the commission had always being of a great help to the people of the area; pointing out that the flood had destroyed farm lands, houses and livestock in the area, called on the three tiers of government to come to the aid of the people of the areas.

He urged the people of the area to vacate the area for now, adding that “the state government is ready to provide the necessary succour that will reduce the plight of the flood victims across the state.”

Residents receiving relief materials

The Ibaji LGA boss also called on spirited individuals as well as corporate organisations to emulate the foot step of HYPPADEC by giving more palliatives- medical attention, food items, basic necessities of life such as clothing, accommodation, canoes and likes.

According to him, such gesture would go along way to alleviate the effect of the flood on the victims.

The Chairman, who said that the flood victims had been thrown into complete distress,maintained that it was very difficult for most of them to leave the areas due to their inability to access means of transportation.

He, therefore, called on sons and daughters of the area,including lovers of the people, to give attention to the clarion call for the provision of relief materials to cushion the effect of the natural disaster on them.

The media unit of Ibaji LGA reports that Hon. Williams Iko’ojo added that government would evaluate the damage done to the people, when the flood recede.
