The battle for the Governorship of Borno may be decided in Biu, as both candidates of the leading political parties, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), narrow down their choices for the deputy governorship from the area.
Biu, the largest Local Government after Maiduguri Metropolitan and Jere is said to have become the darling of both parties following what is described by analysts as a growing political consciousness and their seeming pivotal role in the politics of southern Borno State, where the deputy governor usually comes from.
While the APC gets set to name her choice for the deputy governorship after the stakeholders’ meeting currently going on in Maiduguri, the PDP is keeping its plans close to its chests until it knows where the running mate for the APC will come from.
A source close to the PDP candidate, Muhammed Imam said the PDP candidate has already made offers to one of the contenders for the post in the APC , to be his running mate, in the event the APC fails to pick him.
Initial reports indicate that Umar Usman Kadafur was the favourite, until fresh political realignments which has propped up several others.
The meeting of the APC stakeholders in Maiduguri is expected to ratify Professor Zullum’s choice of running mate and kick start the processes of real politicking in the state.
A source who has been monitoring developments further reports that, as it is, the APC is in tension pending who will eventually be announced as the choice between Umar Usman Kadafur. Usman Mamman Durkwa and Tarpaya all of whom have been lobbying for the post.
