From Uzoh Nwakaije, Awka.

A gang of dare devil armed robbers who gunned down two police officers in the commercial city of Onitsha on Monday have been arrested by security operatives as the fight against criminals intensifies in Anambra.

The commissioner of police in Anambra State, Mr. Samuel Okaula, has confirmed the arrest of some of the suspected armed robbers who killed two of his men recently.

Okaula who made the disclosure in a telephone interview, but said investigation into the incident was ongoing.

The two officers were reported to have been shot dead by the armed bandits operating on a motorcycle at the Upper Iweka area of the commercial city.

It would be recalled that no fewer than five Policemen have lost their lives within a space of three months in Idemili and Onitsha axis this year, which has heightened fears on the rising wave of armed robbers in Anambra.

It was gathered that the robbers, operating with a motor-bike launched a surprise attack on the police team at the Upper Iweka part of Onitsha, and shot the police team at close range, before taking one of the AK47 rifle belonging to one of the Policemen.

Reports said that the deceased were attached to Operations department, Awka and were on patrol when they met their untimely death.

It was further gathered that one of the policemen, Sergeant Ike Anari, died on the spot., while Inspector Cyril Onyia, who was earlier rushed to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital(NAUTH), Nnewi was confirmed dead on arrival.

The Onitsha Police Area Commander, an Assitant Commssioner of Police(ACP), Mr. Yahaya Abubakar, confirmed the incident on Tuesday, said the incident took place in Awada, which is within Awka Area Police command.

He promised that the police would leave no stone unturned until the culprits were brought to book, as he warned criminals to leave the state.
