No fewer than 30 people, including eight children, were killed on Sunday night when suspected terrorists attacked Naridon Village in Kamaru Ward of Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, in one of the deadliest assaults to hit Southern Kaduna in recent months.<\/p>\n
The attackers reportedly\u00a0stormed the village\u00a0at about 11\u00a0p.m., opening\u00a0fire indiscriminately before setting\u00a0houses and shops\u00a0ablaze. The attack\u00a0left dozens dead, several residents injured\u00a0and many families\u00a0displaced.<\/p>\n
The Secretary to\u00a0the Village Head\u00a0of Naridon, Mr. Dogon Rana, confirmed\u00a0the incident, describing\u00a0it as one\u00a0of the worst\u00a0attacks the community\u00a0has experienced.<\/p>\n
According to him, 30 residents have\u00a0so far been\u00a0confirmed dead, including\u00a0eight children, while\u00a0four others sustained \u00a0critical injuries and\u00a0are receiving treatment.<\/p>\n
“We have confirmed\u00a0the killing of\u00a030 people, but\u00a0we fear the\u00a0death toll may\u00a0rise because some\u00a0of the injured\u00a0are in critical\u00a0condition,” Rana said.<\/p>\n
He described the\u00a0attack as devastating, saying many families\u00a0lost loved ones\u00a0while homes, shops\u00a0and property worth\u00a0millions of naira\u00a0were destroyed.<\/p>\n
“There is someone in this village who lost five children in one night. The only\u00a0 surviving child is critically injured and fighting for his life. This tragedy has thrown the entire community into mourning,” he said.<\/p>\n
Rana also disclosed\u00a0that his house\u00a0was among those\u00a0burnt during the\u00a0attack.<\/p>\n
“My house was\u00a0burnt down by\u00a0the attackers. Several\u00a0shops were also\u00a0destroyed, including the\u00a0house belonging to\u00a0the late Mr. Garba. Many families\u00a0have been rendered\u00a0homeless,” he added.<\/p>\n
He attributed the high casualty figure\u00a0 partly to the absence of a motorable road linking the community, saying poor access delayed emergency response and hindered residents from fleeing to safety.<\/p>\n
“If we had\u00a0a good road, help would have\u00a0 reached us much\u00a0earlier, and many\u00a0lives could have\u00a0been saved,” he\u00a0said.<\/p>\n
The community leader\u00a0appealed to the\u00a0 Federal Government, the\u00a0Kaduna State Government\u00a0and security agencies\u00a0to strengthen security\u00a0in the area\u00a0and urgently\u00a0construct an access\u00a0road to the\u00a0village.<\/p>\n
“We are pleading\u00a0with the government\u00a0not to abandon\u00a0us. We need\u00a0adequate security and\u00a0a good road. These attacks have\u00a0 become too frequent, and our people\u00a0can no longer\u00a0sleep with both\u00a0eyes\u00a0closed,” he said.<\/p>\n
A resident, who requested anonymity for security reasons, alleged that 22 members of the Rana family were among those killed. The resident also claimed that homes and businesses were razed during the attack.<\/p>\n
The resident further alleged that the\u00a0 attackers operated for about three hours\u00a0 without resistance despite the presence of military formations in Kamaru and Ungwan Magaji, about two kilometres from the village.<\/p>\n
“As of now, only one soldier\u00a0and four Mobile\u00a0Police officers have\u00a0been deployed to\u00a0the village,” the\u00a0resident alleged.<\/p>\n
The latest attack has heightened fears in Kauru Local Government Area, where\u00a0 several communities have suffered repeated attacks by armed groups in recent years, resulting in deaths, destruction of property and the displacement of residents.<\/p>\n
