Believing the situation had ended after they left, she was shocked when they allegedly returned later in the evening.

“I was in my room cooking when I noticed they were around. After a while everything died down. However, later, we started hearing noise again,” she said.

Ademola alleged that soldiers shone flashlights into her room before ordering her to open the door.

She said after informing them that only she was in the room because her roommate was away, one of the soldiers allegedly became physically aggressive.

“He pinned me to my bathroom door, told me I would like it and warned me not to shout,” she alleged.

According to the student, she managed to free herself and moved towards the entrance, where she demanded that the soldier leave her room.

She further alleged that another soldier entered during the encounter and attempted to calm her while making inappropriate remarks.

“They told me to calm down and that I would love it. When I screamed, they both left, and I quickly forced the door shut,” she recounted.

She said another hostel resident later came to check on her after hearing her cries.

Beyond the allegation of attempted sexual assault, students also claimed that soldiers forcibly entered several hostels, assaulted occupants and made away with more than 60 mobile phones alongside other personal belongings.

The allegations have generated widespread concern among students, parents and civil society groups, with calls for a thorough investigation and justice for the victims.

In a statement, the Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo, confirmed that it had commenced an investigation into the allegations.

The military formation said it was committed to professionalism and accountability and assured members of the public that the facts surrounding the incident would be established.

The Army stated that any personnel found culpable after the investigation would face appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with military regulations.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, condemned the alleged invasion, describing it as unacceptable and inconsistent with the professional standards expected of members of the armed forces.

The student body called on the Chief of Army Staff and the leadership of the Nigerian Army to ensure a transparent investigation, prosecute anyone found responsible, recover stolen property where applicable, and provide justice for affected students.

The outcome of the Army’s investigation is expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and whether criminal or disciplinary proceedings will be initiated against any personnel found to have violated military regulations or Nigerian law.

The Nigerian Army has commenced an investigation into allegations that some of its personnel invaded students’ hostels around Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Osogbo, allegedly assaulting residents, attempting sexual assault, and carting away mobile phones and other valuables.
