Nine Months After Abduction, Collecting N40m, Gunmen Demand Fresh N300m Ransom for NSIEC Commissioner<\/p>\n
Nine months after the abduction of a Permanent Commissioner of the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (\u2070NSIEC), Ahmed Mohammed, his kidnappers have reportedly demanded an additional N300 million for his release, despite an earlier payment of N40 million by his family.<\/p>\n
According to reports, the abductors re-established contact with the family on Monday, asking whether they were prepared to meet the fresh ransom demand. The development has heightened concerns over Mohammed’s prolonged captivity, with relatives saying they have exhausted their resources after raising and paying the initial N40 million in a bid to secure his freedom.<\/p>\n
Mohammed was kidnapped on September 29, 2025, along the Mokwa\u2013Ibbi Road in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State while travelling to Minna on an official assignment. His abduction occurred just weeks before the November 1, 2025 local government elections, in which he was expected to play a key role as an electoral commissioner.<\/p>\n
A family member, who spoke anonymously, said the kidnappers have maintained regular contact and are insisting that no release will be considered unless the additional N300 million is paid. The family, however, said it is financially incapable of raising the amount and has appealed to the Niger State Government and security agencies to intervene urgently.<\/p>\n
A close associate of the commissioner also appealed for government intervention, expressing concern over reports that Mohammed’s health may be deteriorating after spending months in captivity. The associate urged the authorities to intensify efforts to secure his safe and unconditional release.<\/p>\n
