According to him, the move reflects a culture of political accountability that public officials around the world should emulate.

Drawing parallels with Nigeria’s political history, Obi recalled that before becoming president, Tinubu had repeatedly demanded the resignation of former President Goodluck Jonathan over insecurity and economic difficulties. He specifically referenced Tinubu’s criticism of the Jonathan administration during the 2014 abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls, when the then-opposition leader argued that government had failed in its primary responsibility of protecting citizens.

Obi further noted that during the 2023 presidential campaign, Tinubu pledged to improve electricity supply, strengthen security, combat corruption, and improve the welfare of Nigerians. He said the president had challenged voters not to support him for another term if he failed to deliver on those commitments.

According to Obi, conditions have deteriorated since Tinubu assumed office. He cited persistent power shortages, rising incidents of kidnapping and insecurity, economic hardship, and what he described as setbacks in infrastructure, transportation, and anti-corruption efforts as evidence of declining governance performance.

The former governor argued that President Tinubu should accept political responsibility for the country’s challenges by stepping down. Such an action, he said, would help entrench a culture of accountability and reinforce the principle that public office is a trust held on behalf of citizens rather than a personal entitlement.

However, the Presidency swiftly rejected Obi’s position, describing the call for resignation as misguided and politically motivated.

Responding on behalf of the President, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said Obi’s comments reflected “a selective and distorted view” of developments in Nigeria since 2023. He argued that comparisons with the United Kingdom were inappropriate because Nigeria operates a presidential system of government in which the president is elected to a fixed four-year term.

Onanuga also pointed to recent electoral victories recorded by the ruling All Progressives Congress in parts of the country, describing them as an indication of continued public support for President Tinubu and his administration.

“Obi should wait until the presidential election to know what the people think of Tinubu’s government,” he said, adding that attempts to pressure the president into leaving office through social media commentary were “off the mark and anti-democratic.”

Defending the administration’s record on security, Onanuga acknowledged that Nigeria’s security challenges predated Tinubu’s tenure but insisted that significant progress had been made under the current government. He cited the rescue of kidnapping victims, intensified military operations, the neutralisation of terrorist leaders, and increased investment in security infrastructure, including advanced technology and drones.

The presidential aide also dismissed Obi’s criticism of the administration’s economic performance, arguing that available economic indicators showed improvement rather than decline. He highlighted sustained GDP growth, rising foreign reserves, increased oil production, growing government revenues, and gains in the stock market as evidence that the economy was recovering under Tinubu’s reforms.

According to Onanuga, the president inherited severe economic difficulties and has pursued bold measures that previous administrations avoided, including fuel subsidy removal and reforms aimed at attracting investment.

He further cited major infrastructure projects such as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, as well as initiatives including compressed natural gas adoption and interest-free student loans, as examples of the administration’s achievements.

Addressing criticism over electricity supply, Onanuga rejected claims that Tinubu had promised round-the-clock power for all Nigerians. He argued that the president’s commitment was to improve electricity access and end estimated billing, pointing to the signing of the Electricity Act, the rollout of prepaid meters, and efforts to expand off-grid solar power solutions across the country.

While acknowledging the rising cost of living, the presidential spokesman attributed many economic pressures to global developments, including geopolitical tensions affecting international trade and energy markets.

He ultimately described Obi’s call for resignation as “childish and hollow,” insisting that President Tinubu remains focused on implementing reforms, improving security, and laying the foundation for long-term economic growth.

The exchange marks the latest chapter in the growing political rivalry between the opposition figure and the Presidency as attention gradually shifts toward the 2027 general elections.

________

More Reports:

COMPLIMENTS.

Please read trending reports on Everyday.ng

FG Opposes Court Bail For Alleged Terrorist, Oil Bunkerer, Ugochukwu Ibekwe

FG Opposes Court Bail For Alleged Terrorist, Oil Bunkerer, Ugochukwu Ibekwe

Fresh Bloodshed in Bokkos: At Least 18 Farmers Killed in Midnight Attack as Plateau Communities Reel from Renewed Violence

Fresh Bloodshed in Bokkos: At Least 18 Farmers Killed in Midnight Attack as Plateau Communities Reel from Renewed Violence

For comments, adverts, releases, please reach us on:
Twitter on: @Everyday_ng;
E-mail: info@everyday.ng
Telephone, WhatsApp & Telegram: +234 802 2198060.
Contact Address: Back Suite, Off Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Way, Kukwaba District, Abuja.
God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign, arguing that worsening economic hardship, insecurity, and what he described as declining governance standards have undermined the administration’s mandate.
