{"id":99130,"date":"2026-05-29T21:19:07","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T21:19:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=99130"},"modified":"2026-05-29T21:19:07","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T21:19:07","slug":"176-retired-immigration-comptrollers-sue-interior-minister-nis-boss-over-alleged-withheld-retirement-benefits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=99130","title":{"rendered":"176 Retired Immigration Comptrollers Sue Interior Minister, NIS Boss Over Alleged Withheld Retirement Benefits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By <strong>Yemi Oyeyemi<\/strong>, Abuja<\/p>\n<p>A total of 176 retired Comptrollers of Immigration have dragged the Minister of Interior, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), and four other government officials and agencies before the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN), Abuja, over the alleged non-payment of their retirement entitlements.<\/p>\n<p>The retirees, led by Abalaka Betty Ajuma, filed the suit marked NICN\/ABJ\/146\/2026, seeking a court order compelling the defendants to provide benefits they claim are due to them under the NIS Conditions of Service.<\/p>\n<p>The claimants, represented by their lawyer, Maroof Giwa, named as defendants the Minister of Interior, the Comptroller-General of the NIS, the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), the Chairman of the CDCFIB, and the Attorney-General of the Federation.<\/p>\n<p>According to court documents, the retirees contend that they have been denied benefits provided under the Unified and Reviewed Conditions of Service for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Fire Service, Nigeria Immigration Service and Nigeria Prisons Service, 2015, despite retiring honourably on the rank of Comptroller of Immigration.<\/p>\n<p>They argued that the 2015 Conditions of Service, published in a Federal Government gazette, entitle officers who retire on the rank of Comptroller of Immigration to one official vehicle and the services of five domestic staff on specified salary grades.<\/p>\n<p>The claimants maintained that they fulfilled all requirements for the retirement benefits and noted that it has long been customary for officers retiring on the rank of Comptroller and above to receive official vehicles upon retirement.<\/p>\n<p>However, they alleged that the defendants have consistently failed, refused and neglected to provide the vehicles or their monetary equivalent, despite repeated demands and pre-action notices issued through their legal representatives.<\/p>\n<p>The retirees stated that they retired at different times over the years and became entitled to the benefits immediately upon leaving service, as stipulated in the gazetted Conditions of Service.<\/p>\n<p>Among the reliefs sought, the claimants are asking the court to declare that each of them is entitled to an official vehicle as a retirement benefit under the 2015 Conditions of Service. They are also seeking a declaration that the defendants\u2019 failure to provide the benefits is unlawful, wrongful and unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the retirees want the court to order the defendants to provide the vehicles or, alternatively, pay each claimant N15 million as the monetary equivalent of the entitlement.<\/p>\n<p>The case has been assigned to Justice Rakiya Haastrup of the National Industrial Court and was adjourned until June 23 for further proceedings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Yemi Oyeyemi, Abuja A total of 176 retired Comptrollers of Immigration have dragged the Minister of Interior, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), and four other government officials and agencies before the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN), Abuja, over the alleged non-payment of their retirement entitlements.
