{"id":9896,"date":"2018-06-19T21:54:56","date_gmt":"2018-06-19T21:54:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=9896"},"modified":"2018-06-19T21:54:56","modified_gmt":"2018-06-19T21:54:56","slug":"terrorists-in-11-gun-trucks-attack-gajiram-town-agency-report-says-nine-soldiers-died","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=9896","title":{"rendered":"Terrorists in 11 Gun Trucks Attack Gajiram Town; agency report says nine soldiers died"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By <strong>AFP<\/strong><br \/>\nBoko Haram fighters killed nine soldiers and wounded two others in northeast Nigeria, according to military sources, just days after 43 civilians died in deadly suicide bombings.<br \/>\nBoth attacks came as the government, which says the jihadists are on the verge of defeat, urges those displaced by the conflict to return to their homes across the war-torn region.<br \/>\nTroops from 242 battalion Nigerian Army stationed at Gajiram, some 80 kilometres (50 miles) north of the Borno state capital, Maiduguri, came under attack on Monday afternoon.<br \/>\nThe Borno state police initially said its officers and soldiers \u201cengaged the terrorists and promptly repelled the attack\u201d. \u201cThere was no casualty on the side of the police,\u201d it added.<br \/>\nBut military communications seen by AFP said nine soldiers were classed as \u201cKIA\u201d \u2014 killed in action \u2014 while two others were \u201cWIA\u201d \u2014 wounded in action.<br \/>\nLocals said they had seen between 10 and 12 Boko Haram fighters being loaded into vehicles but it was not clear how many were dead or injured, it added.<br \/>\nThere was no immediate official response from army spokesman Brigadier General Texas Chukwu.<br \/>\nGajiram has been attacked before during the Islamist insurgency, which has left at least 20,000 people dead and displaced more than two million since it began in 2009.<br \/>\nIn February last year, seven soldiers were killed in an attack on military positions. Fighters loyal to the Islamic State group-backed faction headed by Abu Musab Al-Barnawi were blamed.<br \/>\nBarnawi split from the faction following long-time Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau in mid-2016 in opposition to his indiscriminate attacks on civilians.<br \/>\nShekau has in particular used suicide bombers against civilian \u201csoft\u201d targets such as camps for the displaced, mosques, markets and bus stations.<br \/>\nBarnawi in contrast has vowed to hit only \u201chard\u201d targets such as the military and police.<br \/>\nOn Saturday, six young girls strapped with explosives were blamed for blasts that killed 43 in Damboa, some 90 kilometres southwest of Maiduguri.<br \/>\nMore than 90,000 internally displaced people live in Damboa, the UN said on Saturday; 18,000 of them live in five camps.<br \/>\nThe world body said humanitarian access outside the town remained \u201climited due to ongoing hostilities and lack of safety assurances\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By AFP Boko Haram fighters killed nine soldiers and wounded two others in northeast Nigeria, according to military sources, just days after 43 civilians died in deadly suicide bombings.
