In a sharply worded statement on Friday, the Fiscal Accountability Committee of Tomorrow (FACT), led by Johnson Momodu, dismissed the number as \u201ca category error dressed up as outrage\u201d and challenged lawmakers to either substantiate it – line by line – or withdraw it entirely.<\/p>\n
\u201cBefore the noise, before the TV debates, there\u2019s a simple obligation: do the math,\u201d the group said.
\nAnd the math, they argue, doesn\u2019t add up.
\nFACT lined the figure against Nigeria\u2019s 2024 budget of \u20a628.7 trillion and found it staggering – more than seven times the country\u2019s annual spending plan. \u201cTranslated,\u201d the group said, \u201cthis suggests a single company touched value equal to over seven years of Nigeria\u2019s total budget within the same seven-year period. Even without a calculator, that should raise eyebrows.\u201d<\/p>\n
So what is the \u20a6210 trillion? Not missing cash, FACT insists. Instead, they describe it as an accounting pile-up: a blend of NNPCL\u2019s liabilities – joint venture costs, royalties – and receivables such as subsidy claims owed to the company.<\/p>\n
\u201cBundling these figures and branding them \u2018missing money\u2019 isn\u2019t a slip,\u201d the statement read. \u201cIt\u2019s either a deep misunderstanding – or a convenient distortion.\u201d<\/p>\n
To drive the point home, the group reached for a street-level analogy: \u201cIf you owe your landlord \u20a6500,000 and someone owes you \u20a6500,000, you\u2019re not \u20a61 million poorer. On paper, you\u2019re square.\u201d<\/p>\n
Adding weight to their argument, FACT noted that Senate Public Accounts Committee Chairman, Senator Wadada, has already clarified that the Senate never declared the \u20a6210 trillion as stolen or missing.<\/p>\n
\u201cStrip away the theft narrative,\u201d FACT said, \u201cand what\u2019s left is not a scandal – at least not yet. It\u2019s an accounting question.\u201d<\/p>\n
Still, the group isn\u2019t letting the matter slide. It issued three direct demands to the Senate:<\/p>\n
\u25aa\ufe0e Show the working: Publish the full methodology behind the figure.<\/p>\n
\u25aa\ufe0e Break it down: Clearly separate actual losses from liabilities and receivables.<\/p>\n
\u25aa\ufe0e Follow the trail: Identify any sums linked to individuals, accounts, or unlawful transactions.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf none of these can be proven,\u201d FACT warned, \u201cthen this isn\u2019t a financial crime grounded in fact. It\u2019s just a number in search of meaning.\u201d<\/p>\n
The group insists it is not defending any institution, but rather pushing for sanity in public discourse.
\n\u201cWe\u2019re tired of debates collapsing under the weight of oversized figures that defy common sense,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n
Their closing line lands like a headline in itself:
