But between the lines, it was a speech about control.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">He defended his administration\u2019s economic reforms- policies that have drawn so much pain from so many across the country &#8211; arguing that recovery was underway and patience was required.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Nigerians used to the patience story simply scoffed, and many living in Abuja could not wonder why the party that has caused so heartaches and pain should worsen it by the gridlock in traffic as witnessed during the convention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The loud complaints from the majority notwithstanding, there are few, mainly direct beneficiaries and government &#8216;yes-men&#8217; who applaud Tinubu&#8217;s policies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Yet the most telling parts of the president&#8217;s speech were not about the economy or opposition parties. They were about APC itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The greatest threat to APC is not the opposition\u2014it is APC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">For a party that has historically battled internal fractures, Tinubu\u2019s emphasis on unity was less a plea and more a directive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\"><b>The Rise of Yilwatda<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The emergence of Nentawe Yilwatda as national chairman\u2014through consensus rather than contest\u2014perfectly captured the spirit of the convention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">There were no dramatic floor fights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">No surprise upsets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">No visible fractures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Instead, there was agreement &#8211; carefully negotiated and tightly managed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Yilwatda, a technocrat with roots in governance and administration, represents a new archetype of party leadership: less populist, more managerial, and crucially, aligned with the presidential center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">In Nigerian political terms, consensus does not mean absence of conflict.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">It means conflict has already been settled behind closed doors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">And in this case, it signals one thing clearly: <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The party structure is now firmly under Tinubu\u2019s influence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Despite the show of unity, APC remains a coalition of competing interests\u2014each recalibrating after the convention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\"><b>The Presidential Bloc (In Control)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: is strategic:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Maintain relevance <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Position for future transitions <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Their loyalty is real\u2014but not unconditional.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\"><b>The Governors (Silent Kingmakers)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Nigeria\u2019s governors remain the most potent political actors after the president.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Their influence:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Control of state party structures <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Ability to mobilise votes <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Power to destabilise or stabilise <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">If aligned, they guarantee victory.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">If fractured, they can unravel everything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\"><b>The Opposition: Fragmented, But Not Finished<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">While APC projected unity,
