Now a prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), he described the probe as \u201cpolitical persecution.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">\u201cI will respond to any allegations only in a court of law,\u201d he declared, invoking his constitutional right to silence until arraignment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">At the heart of the scandal are eye-watering financial allegations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The ICPC says el-Rufai has questions to answer over:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">\u2022 \u20ac1.4 million in foreign currency cash withdrawals with unclear purpose<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">\u2022 180 suspicious payments totalling N2.15 billion from a Consolidated Revenue Account linked to Kaduna\u2019s IGR<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">\u2022 Transfers to undisclosed accounts amounting to N428.1 million<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">\u2022 Diversion of N393.7 million to individuals and companies<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">\u2022 Debit card transactions worth N721.6 million on a revenue account<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The petition that triggered the probe paints an even darker picture: nearly N98.9 billion in domestic loans and a staggering $7.36 billion in foreign loans allegedly collected during his administration between 2015 and 2023. Some projects, it claims, were abandoned despite full payment \u2014 and procurement laws were flouted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The commission also alleged that one aide linked to the case has fled the country, while another potential prosecution witness has formally sought protection, claiming threats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The path to el Rufai&#8217;s detention was itself dramatic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">On February 5, ICPC operatives reportedly received intelligence that el-Rufai had arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and sought assistance from the Department of State Services to arrest him &#8211; unsuccessfully.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">He was later detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after honouring an invitation. Though granted administrative bail, he reportedly failed to meet the conditions and remained in custody before being transferred to the ICPC on February 18.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">By February 19, the ICPC had secured its remand order and executed the search warrant that has now ignited national debate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">In a twist that has set tongues wagging, the commission referenced an appearance by el-Rufai on Arise Television, where he allegedly admitted tapping telephone conversations of the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu &#8211; a claim certain to deepen the political storm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">ICPC investigators say they confronted him with retrieved documents, but he has refused to answer questions, choosing silence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The unfolding saga has sent shockwaves through Nigeria\u2019s political establishment.
