Unidentified gunmen on Tuesday attacked the convoy of Labour Party\u2019s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, at the residence of former Edo State Governor, John Odigie-Oyegun, in Benin City.<\/p>\n
The attack occurred as Obi and his entourage arrived at the Benin residence of the elder statesman for a scheduled courtesy visit. Eyewitness accounts and video clips circulating online showed a chaotic scene as gunshots rang out, sending residents and supporters scrambling for safety.<\/p>\n
Media aides under the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) confirmed the incident, stating that the former Anambra State governor and other political leaders present were unharmed.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe unequivocally confirm there was an attack on Mr. Obi\u2019s convoy. Thankfully, he and members of his team are safe,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n
Photographs shared online showed spent cartridges allegedly recovered from the scene. In one of the images, Obi was seen holding up what appeared to be bullet shells, expressing concern over what he described as a \u201cdeeply troubling development.\u201d<\/p>\n
Speaking briefly after the incident, Obi condemned the attack, describing it as shocking and unacceptable\u2014particularly given that it occurred at the residence of a respected political figure.<\/p>\n
