Officials described the narrative as <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><i>false and misleading<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> and urged media outlets and the public to verify information before publication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">In a statement issued on Monday, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><b>Temitope Ajayi<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, clarified that the image in question is genuine and was captured during an <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><b>actual lunch meeting<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> between the two leaders on <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><b>Sunday, January 4, 2026<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">, in the French capital. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u201cThe narrative that the picture of Presidents Bola Tinubu and Paul Kagame taken in Paris yesterday was AI-generated is not correct,\u201d Ajayi said, stressing that remarks and social media commentary suggesting otherwise were a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><i>misrepresentation of facts<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The controversy began after the photograph, which showed the two presidents seated together, was shared on Tinubu\u2019s official social media accounts. Observers noted a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><b>\u201cGrok\u201d watermark<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> on the image \u2014 a mark associated with generative AI tools developed by <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><i>xAI<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">, leading some users online to allege that the image was fake. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Grok, an AI system capable of producing text and images and performing real-time online search, has been increasingly used across platforms, including for enhancing image quality. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Ajayi explained that the original photograph was taken with a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><b>mobile phone<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">, which produced sub-optimal image quality. To make the picture clearer for publication, the photographer used <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><b>Grok<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><i>enhance<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> its resolution and clarity \u2014 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><b>not to generate a fabricated scene<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">. According to the Presidency, using AI tools for enhancement does not equate to the image being AI-generated. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u201cThe picture is real and not AI generated as claimed,\u201d the statement emphasised.
