Malami was detained after failing to meet stringent bail conditions imposed by the anti-graft agency, which include surrendering his international passport and presenting two serving permanent secretaries as sureties. As a result, he has spent successive nights at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, and is expected to continue reporting daily to the commission through December as interrogation persists. <\/span><\/p>\n

The EFCC has reportedly secured a remand order to detain Malami while it investigates him for <\/span>18 alleged offences<\/b><\/span>, including <\/span>money laundering, abuse of office and suspected financing of terrorism<\/b><\/span>, sources familiar with the case said. But <\/span>Malami\u2019s camp has strongly <\/span>rejected wide-ranging allegations<\/b><\/span>, dismissing many reports circulating in the press as \u201cfalse, misleading and baseless.\u201d In a statement issued by his media aide, Mohammed Bello Doka, the former minister said there is <\/span>no official accusation or charge of terrorism financing<\/b><\/span> against him by the EFCC or any domestic or international law-enforcement agency. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Repatriated Abacha loot<\/b><\/span> \u2014 officials are asking Malami to explain the handling and accounting of <\/span>$346.2 million recovered from Switzerland<\/b><\/span> and funds linked to the <\/span>Island of Jersey<\/b><\/span> in the UK. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Central Bank of Nigeria funds<\/b><\/span> \u2014 including the disbursement of <\/span>N4 billion<\/b><\/span> from the Anchor Borrowers\u2019 Programme. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Multi-billion-naira private investments<\/b><\/span> \u2014 notably an alleged <\/span>N10 billion<\/b><\/span> investment in schools, hotels, and rice mills in Kebbi State. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Questionable deals and transactions<\/b><\/span> over the years, including contentious payments linked to the Ajaokuta Steel concession, judgment debts, and other major government-related settlements. <\/span><\/p>\n

The EFCC is also said to be probing some <\/span>46 bank accounts<\/b><\/span> allegedly connected to Malami, a line of inquiry that has attracted media attention. <\/span><\/p>\n

EFCC spokesperson <\/span>Dele Oyewale<\/b><\/span> declined comment when contacted about specific allegations. <\/span><\/p>\n

Malami’s statement refuted claims that Malami operates or controls 46 bank accounts, calling such assertions \u201cpure fiction\u201d not supported by any official documents or lawful findings. It noted that even individuals cited in related media reports have publicly clarified that they never accused Malami of financing terrorism \u2014 a nuance the statement says was overlooked by sensational headlines. <\/span><\/p>\n

Malami\u2019s office highlighted his record in strengthening Nigeria\u2019s legal framework on anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing during his tenure, including the establishment of the <\/span>Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU)<\/b><\/span> and the passage of relevant legislation in 2022 that contributed to Nigeria\u2019s removal from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list. <\/span><\/p>\n

On the specific issue of the Abacha loot recoveries, Malami\u2019s team argues that public commentary has incorrectly conflated separate recoveries \u2014 notably <\/span>$322.5 million repatriated in 2017\u20132018<\/b><\/span> and <\/span>$321 million brought back from Jersey in 2020<\/b><\/span> \u2014 and wrongly described them as \u201cduplicated,\u201d a characterisation his office calls \u201cdeliberately misleading.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Malami\u2019s detention comes against a backdrop of heightened public scrutiny and political debate. In November 2025, he formally declared his intention to contest the <\/span>2027 governorship election in Kebbi State<\/b><\/span> after leaving the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the African Democratic Congress (ADC). <\/span><\/p>\n

Supporters and the former minister\u2019s camp have framed the ongoing coverage as a <\/span>media trial<\/b><\/span> and politically motivated campaign aimed at tarnishing his reputation, urging Nigerians to disregard what they describe as sensational and unfounded reporting. <\/span><\/p>\n
