The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, as part of the ongoing seven-day national mourning declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.<\/p>\n
The announcement was made on Monday by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who stated that the decision received the formal approval of President Tinubu.<\/p>\n
The holiday, he said, is a mark of deep respect for the former President\u2019s contributions to the country\u2019s political evolution and national development.<\/p>\n
\u201cPresident Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,\u201d Dr. Tunji-Ojo said. \u201cThis public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.\u201d<\/p>\n
He called on Nigerians to observe the day by embracing peace, patriotism, and unity\u2014principles that he said defined Buhari\u2019s vision for the country.<\/p>\n
The declaration follows President Tinubu\u2019s announcement of a seven-day mourning period, which began on Sunday, July 13. During this period, all national flags are to be flown at half-mast across the country and at Nigerian missions abroad.<\/p>\n
The Federal Government extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the late President, the people of Katsina State, and the entire nation, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.<\/p>\n
President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, served as Nigeria\u2019s Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023.
