{"id":93677,"date":"2025-04-26T15:55:13","date_gmt":"2025-04-26T15:55:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=93677"},"modified":"2025-04-26T15:55:13","modified_gmt":"2025-04-26T15:55:13","slug":"why-fg-is-embarking-on-n10b-solar-project-over-n1b-aso-villa-debt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=93677","title":{"rendered":"Why FG is embarking on N10b solar project over N1b Aso Villa debt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">A N923.87m Aso Rock Villa debt necessitated the decision of the Federal Government to build a N10 billion solar electricity project for the country&#8217;s seat of power, Aso Villa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The Villa&#8217;s debt is part of a larger N47.1 billion annual Federal government electricity debt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Addressing journalists on Friday, the Director General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Mustapha Abdullahi, explained that the initiative for the Villa project, was approved by President Bola Tinubu, as part of a strategic move to cut down on government expenditure and promote clean, sustainable energy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">\u201cIt is no longer sustainable for the government to keep paying over \u20a647 billion yearly in electricity bills,\u201d Abdullahi said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">A 2024 advertorial by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), titled \u2018Notice of Disconnection\u2019, revealed that the Presidential Villa alone owed \u20a6923.87 million in electricity charges. The notice threatened to disconnect power to Aso Rock and 86 other federal ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) over the \u20a647.1 billion collective debt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">According to Abdullahi, the transition to solar energy aligns with President Tinubu\u2019s broader energy diversification agenda,\u00a0 adding that the project would ensure uninterrupted power supply to the Villa, reduce reliance on the national grid, encourage innovation among Nigerian engineers, and create new job opportunities within the renewable energy sector.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">But the decision to embark on the solar project has led to virulent criticisms on the social media, where Nigerians are lamenting that they are being left on their own by the President who is considering an alternative source of power supply while they are left to rest on a failed public power supply system.<\/span><!--\/data\/user\/0\/com.samsung.android.app.notes\/files\/clipdata\/clipdata_bodytext_250426_164754_463.sdocx--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A N923.87m Aso Rock Villa debt necessitated the decision of the Federal Government to build a N10 billion solar electricity project for the country&#8217;s seat of power, Aso Villa.
