{"id":93085,"date":"2025-02-24T14:40:10","date_gmt":"2025-02-24T14:40:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=93085"},"modified":"2025-02-24T15:02:43","modified_gmt":"2025-02-24T15:02:43","slug":"how-n550m-abuja-property-ascribed-to-former-kogi-governor-was-purchased-and-dumped-by-shehu-bello","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=93085","title":{"rendered":"How N550m Abuja property &#8216;ascribed&#8217; to former Kogi governor&#8217;s accomplice was purchased and dumped by him"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The Federal High Court, Abuja, was on Monday told that a former governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello did not participate in all the transactions that led to purchase of N550M property in Maitama Abuja by one Shehu Bello.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The court was also informed that Bello&#8217;s name did not feature in all documents relating to the transactions including the title deed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #000000; font-family: 'Didact Gothic'; font-size: 22.5px; text-align: justify;\">Former Governor Bello, Abdulsalam Hudu and Umar Oricho,\u00a0 are defendants in a N110.4 billion fraud case, preferred again them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">\u00a0\u00a0 .<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">A witness of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Olusegun Joseph Adeleke, gave the evidence while testifying in the money laundering charges against the former governor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Adeleke who is the General Manager of EFAB Properties Limited was led in evidence by EFCC lead counsel, Kemi Pinheiro SAN. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">He had narrated to Justice Emeka Nwite how the Chairman of EFAB properties Limited, Fabian Nwora, invited him to transactions by Shehu Bello on the purchase of the property located at No 1, Ikogosi street in Maitama Abuja. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Giving an account of what transpired, he said sometime in 2020, his chairman, Chief Fabian Nwora, introduced him to a young man called Shehu Bello and that they had a discussion concerning the purchase of the property.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">&#8220;We had a discussion concerning the purchase of the property in question. And he told me that the young man would be coming back to make payment for the property at an agreed price of N550 million,&#8221; he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">When asked if he had seen Shehu Bello since that day, he said, &#8220;I saw him three times. The first time was for introduction, the second time for payment and the third time was when he brought a legal document for the execution of the EFAB property.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The EFCC lawyer then mentioned another property at 5th Avenue in Gwarinpa and told the witness to tell the court what he knew about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Responding, the witness said the property was purchased by one Nuhu Mohammed for N70 million and was paid for through a bank transfer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">He was asked if he remembered which bank the money came from, but he said no.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The EFCC witness explained that upon conclusion of transactions, Shehu Bello made payment for the property and a receipt and letter of allocation delivered to him.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_93088\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-93088\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-93088\" src=\"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/796A40182-Copy-2-Copy-768x512-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/796A40182-Copy-2-Copy-768x512-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/everyday.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/796A40182-Copy-2-Copy-768x512-1-696x464.jpg 696w, https:\/\/everyday.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/796A40182-Copy-2-Copy-768x512-1.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-93088\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Yahaya Bello.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">He however said that the said Shehu Bello changed the transactions when he came back for refund of his money upon discovery that the house was under EFCC investigation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Under cross examination by Joseph Bodunde Daudu SAN\u00a0 lead counsel to Yahaya Bello, the witness admitted having transactions with Shehu Bello three times. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">He said that throughout the transactions, he did not sight Yahaya Bello while his name did not also feature in any of the documents on the transactions including the title deed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The witness said that he didn&#8217;t see Shehu Bello who purchased the property in court. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Asked if the witness&#8217; actions were purely based on the instructions of his chairman. He responded, &#8220;Yes.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The defence counsel further asked whether it was correct to say that he did not initiate any discussion with Shehu Bello on his own, to which he also answered, &#8220;Yes.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">On the documents signed for the transactions, the Defendant&#8217;s Counsel asked the witness if he could confirm that Shehu Bello signed his own part in his presence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">&#8220;He did not my Lord,&#8221; he answered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Daudu, SAN, also asked: &#8220;Throughout this transaction, did you set eyes on the defendant?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">&#8220;Not at anytime in the course of this transaction,&#8221; the witness responded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">He was also asked if the name of the defendant appeared anywhere on the documents he said were with the EFCC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">He, again, answered, &#8220;no!&#8221;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The Prosecution then told the court that they had another witness to call, on subpoena.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The Defendant&#8217;s Counsel objected that they were being taken by surprise but added that he had no intention of stalling the trial.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The second witness identified herself as Williams Abimbola, a compliance officer with the United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">She had the subpoena with her, which the lawyer sought to tender as evidence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The Defendant&#8217;s counsel had no objection and it was marked &#8220;Exhibit 1&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The witness read out the documents the subpoena asked for to include the statement of account of Kogi State Government House, from January 1, 2016 to January 31, 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The statements of account of Maselina Njoku, from January 1 to December 31, 2022, were also admitted in evidence, including the account opening packages of American International School and statements of accounts, from September 1 to September 30, 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Meanwhile, the case has been adjourned to March 6 and 7 for continuation of trial.<\/span><!--\/data\/user\/0\/com.samsung.android.app.notes\/files\/clipdata\/clipdata_bodytext_250224_153754_338.sdocx--><br \/>\n<!--\/data\/user\/0\/com.samsung.android.app.notes\/files\/clipdata\/clipdata_bodytext_250224_153754_338.sdocx--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal High Court, Abuja, was on Monday told that a former governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello did not participate in all the transactions that led to purchase of N550M property in Maitama Abuja by one Shehu Bello.
