Clark didn&#8217;t see Nigeria of his dreams, but laid foundation for it, says David Mark as Tinubu, Atiku, others mourn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Hours after his family confirmed the\u00a0 passing of Elder Statesman and Convener of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Chief Edwin Clark, it has been a deluge of commiserations from the President, Bola Tinubu, heavy weight politicians and the ordinary man on the streets of Delta State.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\"> Former Senate President David Mark said\u00a0 Clark, just like Afenifere chieftain who died last week, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, may not have seen the Nigeria of his dreams; but that both men have laid a solid foundation for it.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_ad jeg_ad_top jnews_header_bottom_ads\">\n<div class=\"ads-wrapper \"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"post-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"post-wrap\">\n<div class=\"jeg_main jeg_sidebar_none\">\n<div class=\"jeg_container\">\n<div class=\"jeg_content jeg_singlepage\">\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"jeg_main_content col-md-no-sidebar-narrow\">\n<div class=\"jeg_inner_content\">\n<div class=\"entry-content no-share\">\n<div class=\"content-inner \">\n<p class=\"p3\">Said President Tinubu, in a statement from his office, of Clark: \u201dChief Clark spoke for the Niger Delta. He spoke for the nation. His views and interventions on national issues were distinct and patriotic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\u201dPa Clark, a lawyer and educationist, believed in a united Nigeria, and until his last breath, he never stopped reaching out to people from different parts of the country to work together to preserve national unity based on justice and equity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\u201dAs an astute politician, his political opponents never doubted his words\u2019 weight, confidence, and conviction when he spoke. Indeed, a patriot has transitioned to the great beyond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\u201dHistory will remember him as a man who fought gallantly for the rights of the people of the Niger Delta, unity in diversity, and true federalism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201dI know many generations will remain proud of how his efforts contributed to national prosperity and stability.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"jeg_inner_content\">\n<div class=\"entry-content no-share\">\n<div class=\"content-inner \">\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">According to the family, Clark died on Monday, February 17, 2025 at the age of 97.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">An official statement by Prof. C. C. Clark, on behalf of the family and Mr. Penawei Clark on behalf of his children, reads: \u201cThe Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family of Kiagbodo Town, Delta State, wishes to announce the passing of Chief (Dr.) Sen. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, OFR, CON, on Monday, 17th February 2025.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">He was a lawyer, an administrator, Ijaw National Leader, a nationalist, a freedom fighter, leader, South-South Peoples Assembly, leader, Southern and Middle-Belt Leaders Forum, SMBLF, and leader, Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">He was Commissioner for Education, Mid-Western Region, 1968-71; Commissioner for Finance and Establishment, defunct Bendel State, 1972-75; Federal Commissioner for Information, 1975 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">under Military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">; and a Senator, 1979-83.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">He was born in Kiagbodo, in the Ijaw area of what is now Delta State, attending primary and secondary schools at Effurun, Okrika and Afugbene before completing further studies at the Government Teacher Training College.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Clark after a brief stint as a school teacher, travelled abroad to earn a law degree.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar described his passing as the exit of a true federalist, nationalist and patriot\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">His words in a state: &#8220;Our nation was still mourning the demise of exemplary statesman Pa Ayo Adebanjo, 96, when the sad news of your passing away was brought to my attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">&#8220;Chief Edwin Clark, 97, the Ebi-Ebekekere, Owei of Western Ijaw in Delta State, was a Trojan war horse in the battlefields for independence. Above all, he was a diehard proponent of nation-building, true federalism, equity, and good governance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">&#8220;Undoubtedly, he was a veteran freedom fighter, educationist, philanthropist, legal luminary, and astute administrator who mentored many nationalists and patriots like us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">&#8220;Clark spoke loudly and worked assiduously in support of inclusiveness, especially for the minority ethnic groups in Nigeria. He was fiery, fearless, and forthright in his peaceful and constitutional pursuit of an egalitarian society in our country. Sadly, that lofty dream seemed to have dimmed before his eyes.&#8221;<\/span><!--\/data\/user\/0\/com.samsung.android.app.notes\/files\/clipdata\/clipdata_bodytext_250218_172519_170.sdocx--><\/p>\n<p>David Mark further lamented over the demise of two elder statesmen and patriots: former Federal Commissioner for Information, Pa Edwin Kiagbodo Clark and Pa Ayo Adebanjo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir demise marks the end of an era thus, creating a void in Nigeria&#8217;s socio-political landscape,\u201d Mark stated.<\/p>\n<p>Senator Mark described Clark and Adebanjo as the &#8220;last of the conscience of the nation, who tirelessly fought for a progressive Nigeria of equal opportunities for all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth elder statesmen were united in their quest for an egalitarian society, free from oppression and marginalization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senator Mark added that their exit is painful and regrettable, especially at this time when Nigeria needs men of good conscience and valour to address the numerous challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Senator Mark therefore urged the President Bola Tinubu led Federal Government, to immortalize Clark and Adebanjo for their selfless services and contributions to Nigeria.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hours after his family confirmed the\u00a0 passing of Elder Statesman and Convener of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Chief Edwin Clark, it has been a deluge of commiserations from the President, Bola Tinubu, heavy weight politicians and the ordinary man on the streets of Delta State.
