{"id":92943,"date":"2025-02-06T15:35:31","date_gmt":"2025-02-06T15:35:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=92943"},"modified":"2025-02-06T15:35:31","modified_gmt":"2025-02-06T15:35:31","slug":"tinubu-sacks-embattled-university-of-abuja-vc-governing-council-other-varsities-affected-by-changes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=92943","title":{"rendered":"Tinubu sacks embattled University of Abuja VC, Governing Council; other varsities affected by changes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The succession battle at the University of Abuja\u00a0 (now known as Yakubu Gowon University) has taken a new turn with the sacking of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Aisha Maikudi, and the entire governing council of the troubled school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The University is not the only affected by the changes that affected other federally owned ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The University of Abuja has been embroiled in a leadership crisis, with many Professors of the school rejecting the choice of Maikudi after she was named from her acting position weeks ago<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">A statement by the President Bola Tinubu\u2019s spokesman, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, says Professor Lar Patricia Manko takes over from Maikudi and will occupy the seat for only six months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The full statement reads: &#8220;President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced significant leadership changes at several federal universities, including the University of Abuja, now known as Yakubu Gowon University.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">&#8220;These changes are effective immediately.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">&#8220;At Yakubu Gowon University, President Tinubu dissolved the entire governing council and relieved Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi of her duties as Vice-Chancellor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">&#8220;Senator Lanre Tejuoso, currently Pro-Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, has been appointed Pro-Chancellor of the Yakubu Gowon University. He will be succeeded in Makurdi by Senator Joy Emordi, now pro-chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">&#8220;To succeed Maikudi, President Tinubu appointed Professor Lar Patricia Manko as Acting Vice Chancellor at the Yakubu Gowon University for a six-month term. She will not be eligible to apply for the substantive Vice Chancellor position when it becomes available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">&#8220;In addition, President Tinubu has removed Professor Polycarp Emeka Chigbu from his position as Acting Vice-Chancellor at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), before his tenure ends on February 14.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">&#8220;Professor Oguejiofu T. Ujam has been appointed as his successor for six months and will not be eligible to apply for the permanent position.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">&#8220;The leadership changes at UNN extend to the role of Pro-Chancellor, with Gen. Ike Nwachukwu reassigned to Pro-Chancellor at the University of Uyo. President Tinubu appointed Engineer Olubunmi Kayode Ojo as the new Pro-Chancellor of UNN. Previously, Ojo held the same position at the Federal University of Lokoja and the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">&#8220;Professor Zubairu Tajo Abdullahi, currently the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, has been appointed to succeed Ojo at the Federal University of Lokoja.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">&#8220;Senator Sani Stores is the new Pro-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education, succeeding Senator Joy Emordi. Senator Stores is a Council Member at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">&#8220;Additionally, Barrister Olugbenga Kukoyi, a current Council Member at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has been appointed the new Pro-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">&#8220;All appointments and reassignment decisions are effective immediately.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">&#8220;President Tinubu emphasised that these changes reflect his administration\u2019s commitment to revitalising Nigeria\u2019s higher education system through dynamic leadership and accountability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">&#8220;The restructuring aims to strengthen governance and academic excellence within Nigeria\u2019s tertiary education sector.&#8221;<\/span><br \/>\n<!--\/data\/user\/0\/com.samsung.android.app.notes\/files\/clipdata\/clipdata_bodytext_250206_162745_221.sdocx--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The succession battle at the University of Abuja\u00a0 (now known as Yakubu Gowon University) has taken a new turn with the sacking of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Aisha Maikudi, and the entire governing council of the troubled school.
