\u00a0Jimmy Carter, the\u00a039th president of the United States,\u00a0has died at age 100.<\/p>\n

Carter was\u00a0\u201csurrounded by his family\u201d\u00a0at his home in Plains, Georgia, in his final moments, the Carter Center said in a statement Sunday.<\/p>\n

President Joe Biden\u00a0said Carter \u201cstands as a model of what it means to live a life of meaning and purpose,\u201dand remembered Carter as a \u201cdear friend.\u201d<\/p>\n

President-elect Donald Trump\u00a0said Americans owe the former president \u201ca debt of gratitude.\u201d\u00a0Preparations are underway for a state funeral.<\/p>\n

Carter was a peanut farmer and US Navy lieutenant before going into politics, eventually serving one term as governor of Georgia and as president of the United States from 1977 to 1981.<\/p>\n

He was the\u00a0only former US president\u00a0to reach 100 years old.<\/p>\n

Rosalynn Carter, the former president\u2019s wife of more than 75 years, who was known for her mental health advocacy and humanitarian work,\u00a0died in November 2023 at 96. The Carters were the\u00a0longest-married presidential couple\u00a0in US history.<\/p>\n

Carter\u2019s Secret Service detail reflects on serving former president while preparing for his state funeral<\/strong><\/p>\n

Members of the Carter Protective Division of the US Secret Service are in mourning tonight as agents privately share stories in person and in group messages of the agency\u2019s work guarding the former president and his family for nearly half a century, a law enforcement official tells CNN.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been planning for (today),\u201d said the official, \u201cbut it\u2019s still a gut punch.\u201d<\/p>\n

While in office and beyond, the Secret Service has maintained a protective detail for the Carter family based in Georgia.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not finished,\u201d said the official, noting the Secret Service was working with the Defense Department to plan for Carter\u2019s expected return to Washington, DC, for a memorial service and his final resting back in Georgia.<\/p>\n

\u201cDozens and dozens of (Secret Service) agents had the honor of a lifetime to serve the Carters\u201d the official said. \u201cWe\u2019re coming to grips with the fact this era is now ending.\u201d<\/p>\n

CNN has reached out to the Secret Service for formal comment on Carter\u2019s passing.<\/p>\n
