{"id":91059,"date":"2024-07-18T17:52:00","date_gmt":"2024-07-18T17:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=91059"},"modified":"2024-07-18T17:52:00","modified_gmt":"2024-07-18T17:52:00","slug":"surprise-shock-applause-as-nlc-tuc-give-three-gbosas-to-tunubu-over-n70k-minimum-wage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=91059","title":{"rendered":"Surprise, shock, applause as NLC, TUC give three &#8216;Gbosas&#8217; to Tunubu over N70K minimum wage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">It was an admixture of applause, surprise, and shock as the Presidents of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), Joe Ajaero, and Festus Usifo respectively joined other Labour leaders to hail by shouting three &#8216;gbosas&#8217; to President Bola Tinubu for approving a seventy thousand naira (N70,000) monthly minimum wage for workers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">As the Labour officials did this, ministers and top government officials applauded the gesture in a viral video on Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 360px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-91059-1\" width=\"360\" height=\"640\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/VID-20240718-WA0037.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/VID-20240718-WA0037.mp4\">https:\/\/everyday.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/VID-20240718-WA0037.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Many were surprised and taken aback by the volteface of Ajaero and others having boasted last week they would not go below N250,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">On social media, commentators berated the Labour leaders for shortchanging workers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\"><b>In approving the new wage President promised to review the national minimum wage law every three years.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information, announced this at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, on Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">According to Idris, the president made the announcement at a meeting with leaders of the organised labour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Last week, President Tinubu met with Labour leaders over the Minimum wage issue where he declared that Nigerian workers deserve improved welfare, better wages, as well as safe and enhanced working conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The President also said he was concerned about the welfare of Nigerian workers and that his administration was working seriously to come up with a wage that would be acceptable to all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Idris also said President Tinubu would perfect the proposal on the new minimum wage in a bill to be forwarded to the National Assembly next week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">\u201cWe\u2019re happy to announce today that both the federal government and Organised Labour have agreed on an increase on the N62,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">\u201cThe new national minimum wage that we expect to be submitted to the National Assembly for legislation is N70,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">\u201cBut that is not all. Mr President has assured of massive investment in infrastructure. There is also a deepening of the investment of the Federal Government in renewable energy,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Idris said to complement the new minimum wage, the Federal Government would ramp up the rollout of Compressed Natural Gas-powered buses in order to check the high cost of transportation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">He said that efforts were also being made to improve the economy and reduce inflation, including the recent directive on the suspension of duty on certain food imports to bring down the prices of food items.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Hon.
