{"id":90323,"date":"2024-06-24T14:53:06","date_gmt":"2024-06-24T14:53:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=90323"},"modified":"2024-06-24T15:16:29","modified_gmt":"2024-06-24T15:16:29","slug":"nigerias-aviation-minister-confirms-video-of-extortion-at-airports-fg-moves-to-tackle-menace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=90323","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria&#8217;s aviation minister confirms video of extortion at airports, FG moves to tackle menace (+Video)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">In a confirmation of allegations made in a viral video by a traveller, who painted a picture of the ordeal of travelling in and out of the country through the airports, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, says\u00a0 efforts to tackle the menace of touts and extortionists at the airports.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The female traveller, perhaps a foreigner, going by her skin colour, told how she was stopped at least 10 times, for her papers to be checked by all manner of officials, asking irritable and unnecessary questions, some even begging for favours.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 368px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-90323-1\" width=\"368\" height=\"640\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/VID-20240624-WA0010.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/VID-20240624-WA0010.mp4\">https:\/\/everyday.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/VID-20240624-WA0010.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">In contrast, according to her, her papers were only checked twice in Ethiopia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The minister, who made this known on his verified X account (@fkeyamo) on Sunday, expressed sadness over prevalence of touts and extortionists at the country\u2019s international airports.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Mr Keyamo said he had received series of complaints from Nigerians concerning touts and extortionists that were giving the nation a negative image.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">\u201cJust to set the records straight, most of the agencies involved in this menace are not under the control of the aviation ministry, though they are stationed at our airports.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">\u201cHowever, I have been working closely with other Ministers, arms of government and agencies who are responsible for these agencies and a solution is in sight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">\u201cWe are all working under the coordination of the National Security Adviser who called a meeting a few days ago on this issue and we shall soon unveil practical steps being taken to stem this ugly tide.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">The minister thanked Nigerians for their eternal vigilance on burning issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">Mr Keyamo affirmed he had received several complaints about the menace of begging and extortion at the nation\u2019s International airports by a few unscrupulous persons that gave the country bad image.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 17px;\">\u201cMy phones are beeping every minute with messages about this from well-meaning Nigerians.
