{"id":7228,"date":"2018-01-16T00:35:27","date_gmt":"2018-01-16T00:35:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=7228"},"modified":"2018-01-16T00:35:27","modified_gmt":"2018-01-16T00:35:27","slug":"resplendent-armed-forces-remembrance-day-nationwide-incident-in-awka","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=7228","title":{"rendered":"Resplendent Armed Forces Remembrance Day nationwide; &#8220;incident&#8221; in Awka"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure id=\"attachment_7230\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7230\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7230\" src=\"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/2018-01-16-01-32-25-1146292127.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"202\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7230\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">President Buhari paying his respects.<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nAdditional reports from\u00a0<strong>Chuks Moses<\/strong>, in Awka.<br \/>\nFrom Abuja to Kano; Lagos to Calabar, it was honours galore as President Muhammadu Buhari and State Governors paid respects to fallen soldiers who gave their lives to protect the territorial integrity of the nation; but in Awka, Anambra State, two serving soldiers slumped and fears were being expressed at press time on the state of their health.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nOccasion was the annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day, where an immaculately dressed President and Commander-in-Chief, his deputy, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, and service chiefs each laid wreaths for the unknown soldier.<br \/>\nThe process was repeated by states&#8217; chief executives country wide.<br \/>\nTwo soldiers tragically slumped at the 2018 Armed Forces and Remembrance Day ceremony at the Dr Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, Anambra State.<br \/>\nThe two personnel, one each from the army and the navy slumped while on parade.<br \/>\nThey were immediately given first aid medical attention by a combined team of medical personnel including the Anambra State commissioner for Health, Dr Josephat Akabuike.<br \/>\nThey were subsequently evacuated from the field to undisclosed hospital for more medical attention.<br \/>\nAn army source who pleaded anonymity told our correspondent that \u00a0the victims might have been affected by what he called \u00a0&#8216;sun-stroke&#8217; .<br \/>\nAccording to him, &#8220;It&#8217;s not unusual to see such occurrence during parades, more so under intense \u00a0sunshine. We are hoping they would come back in the end.<br \/>\nA source at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Teaching Hospital, said,&#8221; The soldier here is in a critical condition. He fell flat on his forehead, hitting hard on the tar floor.<br \/>\n&#8220;He is at the intensive unit here. We pray he would survive. We suspect he had malignant malaria which aggravated his condition&#8221;.<br \/>\nGovernor Willie Obiano in his Armed Forces Remembrance Day speech enjoined Nigerians to remember the families of the nation\u2019s fallen heroes and pray for the souls of the departed and charged the officers to continue to have \u00a0the courage to selflessly defend the country.<br \/>\nHe said they had done much to keep the nation united, saying &#8220;but for the internal and external wars these fallen heroes had fought, we would not have been enjoying the peace we have now\u2019\u2019.<br \/>\nThe Anambra State chairman of the Nigeria Legion, \u00a0Major Nwankwo Ifeanyichukwu,rtd, called for a better welfare for \u00a0members of the legion.<br \/>\nHe expressed worries that despite the contributions of the retired and dead military men, their families were still passing through harrowing economic experiences due to poor remuneration and welfare.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Additional reports from\u00a0Chuks Moses, in Awka.
