\nKogi Government on Sunday confirmed the compulsory retirement of eight permanent secretaries, some directors and dismissal of 1, 774 others from the state civil service.
\nThe News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered in Lokoja that the affected staff were served their letters last December.
\nThe letters were signed by the state Head of Service, Mrs Deborah Ogunmola and the Chairman of the state Civil Service Commission, Mr Ado Shaibu.
\nA copy of the retirement letter addressed to one of the affected permanent secretaries indicated that the retirement was\u00a0\u201cin the interest of the public.\u201d
\nSome of the affected permanent secretaries told NAN that they were contemplating legal action.
\nHowever, Mrs Petra Akinti-Onyegbule, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Yahaya Bello, defended the action, saying it was part of ongoing reforms in the civil service.
\nAccording to her, the retirement affected only permanent secretaries that have served for four years and above.
\n\u201cThe retired permanent secretaries have been paid their consolidated benefits that accrued to them.
\n\u201cAlso affected are civil servants who have attained the special salary grade level 17,\u201d she said.
\nThe governor\u2019s media aided added that directors that served for eight years and above would also\u00a0be affected.
\nShe said the exact number of directors to be affected would be based on the outcome of the recent promotion interviews conducted for them.
\n\u201c In order to get the best replacement for the retired permanent secretaries, directors who had been in office for eight years and above but are yet to attain retirement age or maximum number of years in office were given the opportunity to partake in the exams to fill the position of permanent secretaries.
\n\u201cThe result of the examinations which held on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 and followed by interviews is yet to be out.
\n\u201cUntil the result is out, we will not be able to put a definite figure on the number of directors that will be affected by the compulsory retirement,\u2019\u2019 she said.
\nThe chief press secretary also confirmed that 1,667 workers with fake certificates were dismissed from the state civil service.
\nShe said that those dismissed were uncovered during the screening carried out by the state government in 2016 and 2017.
\nAkinti-Onyegbule also said 107 other workers were dismissed for engaging in fraudulent activities.
\n\u201cKogi state government is carrying out reforms at different stages to reposition its civil service for effectiveness, efficiency and productivity.
\n\u201cThe screening exercise which began in 2016 has since ended.
\n\u201cThe reversal of the inverted pyramid at the civil service is another phase of the much needed reforms meant to ensure the civil service plays its role as the engine room of government efficiently and effectively.\u201d she said.
\nAlso in Kogi, doctors, according to NAN, are angry over the inability of the state to pay their full monthly salary and have resolved to shut hospitals on Monday.<\/p>\n
\nThe Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has directed its members to resume strike on Monday over state governments\u2019s failure to meet their demands.
\nDr Godwin Tijani, the Chairman of the association, said in Lokoja on Sunday that the inability of the state government to pay the doctors\u2019 full salaries was unacceptable.
\nBesides, Tijani said all the doctors\u2019 associations and union dues as well as members\u2019 cooperative society contributions were not remitted in full whereas 100 per cent taxes were deducted from their salaries.
\nTijani added that even some doctors were yet to be paid.
\n\u201cCongress, therefore, resolved that all her members across the state should resume total and indefinite withdrawal of healthcare services from all hospitals in Kogi, with effects from 12:00 midnight on Sunday, Jan 7, 2018.
\n\u201cWe want government to give a definite time line for the full implementation of adjusted CONMESS (new salary structure) for doctors in the state civil service and the accrued arrears since January, 2014.
\n\u201cCongress will reconvene once the state government responds appropriately to the aforementioned demands,\u201d he said.
\nTijani, however, appreciated the commissioners for Health and Finance and others who were at the congress to douse tension and ensure peaceful resolution of the matter.
\nHe also commended their members for their patience and understanding.
\nIt would be recalled that the Kogi NMA had suspended an earlier strike over the demand on June 22, 2017 following the state government assurances that it would meet their demands.
