{"id":69062,"date":"2024-02-16T15:38:19","date_gmt":"2024-02-16T15:38:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=69062"},"modified":"2024-02-16T15:38:19","modified_gmt":"2024-02-16T15:38:19","slug":"lawyer-opposes-shut-down-of-popular-abuja-supermarket-by-govt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/?p=69062","title":{"rendered":"Lawyer opposes shut down of popular Abuja supermarket by govt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Abuja-based lawyer and Executive Director of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Citizens Advocacy for Social Economic Rights (CASER), Barrister Frank Tietie, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">has lashed out at the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Federal Competition &amp; Consumer\u00a0 Protection Commission (FCCPC) for shutting down popular Abuja shopping outlet, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Sahad Stores in Area 11 of Garki District.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Recall that earlier on Friday, FCCPC officials <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">sealed off the head office of Sahad supermarket over customers extortion and lack of transparency in prices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Dr Adamu Abdullahi, the Acting Executive Vice Chairman of FCCPC, while sealing off the premises, said the act was an obnoxious practice which amounted to violation of rights under the FCCP Act.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">He said the practice contravened Section 155 (3) of the FCCPA and the fine amounted to N100 million or more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">\u201dWe found out that they are contravening this law and made sure that we came to tell them that our mandate is very clear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">\u201dWhat we have come here today to do is to make sure that they complied with the law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">\u201dWe called them to defend themselves but they failed to show up and in the long run, they sent a lawyer and the lawyer is not familiar with the case but we requested for names of people that we wanted to come and defend them.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_69064\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69064\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-69064\" src=\"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/FCCPC-300x192.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/everyday.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/FCCPC-300x192.jpg 300w, https:\/\/everyday.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/FCCPC-696x445.jpg 696w, https:\/\/everyday.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/FCCPC.jpg 727w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-69064\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">FCCPC<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">\u201dThose people refused to come and these are the people in charge of retail, fix prices on the computer system and shelves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">\u201dWe do not have a choice than to seal off the premises until they comply with the provisions of the law,\u201d Abdullahi said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">He said that the Commission would continue to protect the citizens in line with President Bola Tinubu\u2019s agenda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">The FCCPC boss said the Commission would continue to monitor supermarkets to make sure they complied with the law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Mrs Boladale Adeyinka, the Director Surveillance and Investigations Department of FCCPC, said that price tags on products on the shelves of the supermarket were different from prices at the pay point computers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Adeyinka said that even the same products and brand had different prices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">\u201dThe same products, the same brand has different prices. One is N5,000 while one is N6,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">\u201dImagine if you buy 10 pairs, that means you have been short-changed by N10,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">\u201dIn this period, we want people to have maximum value for their money,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Mr Salisu Zango, an official of Sahad Supermarket, admitted that the store had engaged in the practice but had since made amends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">\u201dWe have corrected it,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Lamenting the sealing of the stores, Barrister Tietie noted that it<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\"> is one of Abuja&#8217;s most consumer friendly super stores with highly courteous staff and\u00a0 boasts of a collection of household supplies and appliances at highly affordable prices. I can attest to that. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">He adds, &#8220;What is however of utmost consideration when authorities shut down businesses is that regulators must exercise some restraint in applying sanctions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">&#8220;Shutting down the operations of one of Abuja&#8217;s biggest employers of labour does not serve the interest of an already battered economy where businesses are finding it hard to survive and struggling against the odds of high energy prices with near endless taxes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">&#8220;In the absence of an emergency hazard, fines and ultimately imprisonment of erring officers are better forms of deterrence than causing irreparable losses to businesses which serve larger societal interests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">&#8220;The FCCPC action in shutting down Sahad Stores is counterproductive, authoritarian and highly unprogressive. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">&#8220;The FCCPC must therefore, as a commission which serves consumers&#8217; interests, immediately unseal Sahad Stores\u00a0 to allow its operations to continue while it deals with the persons it considers as\u00a0 delinquents. &#8220;This is to avoid the huge losses the stores would incur especially in terms of loss of customers and failure to meet its obligations to supplies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">&#8220;The FCCPC should further issue a statement clarifying its actions so that the situation may not reoccur with other businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">&#8220;For many of us, Abuja residents, the\u00a0 Sahad brand is now beyond the interest of its owners. It is an iconic Abuja brand.
